In 1967 Britain had more electric vehicles on its roads than every other country on earth put together, and they were all delivering milk.

There were tens of thousands of them. The milk float: open sided, battery under the floor, top speed of about 15 miles an hour, and a whine you could pick out in your sleep. It was charged overnight at the depot and was back there by lunchtime.

It carried glass bottles. Each one was collected from your step the next morning, washed and refilled. A bottle went round like that 20 or 30 times before it broke. The foil cap went for scrap. There was no other packaging.

The milk had come from farms within a few miles, through a local dairy, and was on the step before 7.

So here is what the country had. A zero-emission delivery fleet. Reusable containers with a return rate any modern scheme would kill for. No plastic. A supply chain you could cycle the length of. A man who noticed if an old lady's bottles were piling up, and knocked.

It was dismantled in about 15 years, because a supermarket could sell milk a few pence cheaper in a plastic jug as a way of getting you through the door.

Every piece of that system is now the subject of a government target for 2040.

It was running in 1967, silently, in the dark, and nobody thought it was worth a mention.

A man who passed his medical in 1996 with flying colours has four diseases today, and not one number in his body has changed.

Blood pressure 135/85. Cholesterol 210. Fasting blood sugar 105. BMI of 26.

In 1996 that was a clean bill of health and a handshake. Today the same man, with the same blood, is hypertensive, has high cholesterol, is prediabetic and overweight. Four diagnoses, and he never caught a thing.

1997: the line for diabetes drops from 140 to 126. 1.7 million new diabetics by morning.

1997: high blood pressure drops from 160/100 to 140/90. 13 million new patients.

1998: high cholesterol drops from 240 to 200. 42 million new patients.

1998: overweight drops from a BMI of 27 to 25. 29 million people go to bed normal and wake up with a weight problem.

2003: prediabetes is widened from 110 to 100. It now covers 98 million Americans, more than 1 adult in 3, for a condition the World Health Organization declines to call by that name.

2017: blood pressure again, down to 130/80. Another 31 million. Nearly half the adults in America are hypertensive.

When the cholesterol targets were tightened again in 2004, eight of the nine men who wrote them had been paid by companies that make statins.

No germ. No outbreak. No change in a single artery. Just a room, a vote, and a tablet waiting on the far side of every line.

In every other branch of medicine you have to get ill to become a patient. In this one they bring the disease to you.

The last healthy people are the ones who haven't been tested yet.

1911: Americans eat 18lb of butter each a year. Heart attacks are so rare that doctors write them up as curiosities.

1961: The American Heart Association tells the nation to swap butter for vegetable oil. No trial has tested this. They are quite sure.

1984: Time magazine does a frowning face out of 2 fried eggs and a rasher of bacon. Britain makes the advice official the same year.

1997: Butter eating in America hits 4lb a head. The public has done exactly as it was told.

Obesity has more than doubled. Diabetes is up sevenfold. The fat that took butter's place came out of a seed, by way of a refinery.

2014: The largest review ever done finds no link between saturated fat and heart disease. Time runs a new cover. It says Eat Butter.

2016: A study of 636,000 people finds butter does nothing to the heart and slightly lowers the risk of diabetes.

So the experts took 53 years, several billion pounds and a generation of other people's arteries to catch up with a Bronze Age Irishman and a hole in a bog.

He lost everything to pay a tax on a number that doesn't exist anymore.

Does the government give him his money back?
No.

Does the government give him his truck back?
No.

Does the government care?
No.

They sold this idea as "taxing billionaires." But billionaires have armies of lawyers, offshore accounts, and trusts. They'll be fine.

You know who won't be fine? Your mom. Your dad. Your neighbor with a small business. The farmer down the road who's had the same land for four generations and now has to sell it because dirt got expensive.

You're not taxing wealth. You're taxing people for owning things.

It's like getting a parking ticket for a car you might drive somewhere someday.

They want you to own nothing and be happy. To fund the fraud, waste and abuse of the welfare state they created.

There is enough money. More tax isn't needed. It's all a lie. But you've been gaslit into believing this is a rich vs poor debate.
