I keep going back to this scene in my mind. The first thing I saw upon arriving to Honduras earlier this year. I did not even plan to take a picture or a video, but was fascinated by the sight after an overnight flight from Europe.
During my months there I saw many spectacular sights: luxury resorts, Caribbean views, interesting animals, the second largest coral reef with the world, and people building new technologies that look like sci-fi to many who saw them. I took hundreds of pictures, but this is the scene I keep going back to.
Because what we did on Roatan in @VitaliaCity and @Prosperahn should ultimately benefit these very people - ordinary people living in one of the most violent and poorest places in the world.
People who despite the tough conditions try to make the most out of what they have, and find joy in small moments like waiting for their family at the airport.
This is what the current Honduran government is working to destroy by breaking its commitments and using kangaroo courts assembled by political decrees.
Prospera has created one of the best business environments in the world on Roatan, and within a few years, attracted $120M+ in direct investment, giving employment opportunities to ~4000 people, vast majority Hondurans. And this was just the beginning. The goal was, and still remains, to bring in tens of billions.
And Prospera is not alone. Other special zones that the regime wants to abolish are very useful to Hondurans.
In @CiudadMorazan mainland Honduran families have found stable employment and a refuge from gang violence. Orquideia ZEDE hires people to produce products for export.
All of these places show how the world could be improved, and how Honduras could be more prosperous.
But the government has other plans. They seem to like the idea of Special Zones, but only if they come with cronyism, and money from their authoritarian friends.
They claim to do this in the name of the people, yet use double standards when they are caught in corruption, and when they do deals with regimes whose only goal is staying in power.
Their vision is a country in which everybody outside the regime has to be content with crumbs, leftovers, and handouts from the wealthy leaders.
They doubled down on their threats to ZEDEs only when they were caught in corruption and their popularity started to decline.
People of Honduras stand to lose tens of billions in lost economic opportunity. The reckless behavior of their government could lead to a fine of another $10B, to be paid from the public funds while the officials keep getting rich.
Yeah, the investors can get money in court, but this is not why they started this in the first place.
It is up to the people of Honduras to stop this insanity, but we should keep in mind that this is no Switzerland and that many are dependent or afraid of government and organized crime.
Whatever happens with the foreign investment, we should always stand with them, and to them this post is dedicated.
Many in Congress are watching, closely & with great concern, the status of the rule of law in Honduras. Given the legally-binding CAFTA-DR agreement, we expect U.S. investments in the ZEDE to be fully honored.
