With AI becoming more and more dominant in online search, just how important are core algorithm updates anyway?
Google's May core update finished rolling out on after nearly 12 days. SEO professionals described the update as heavier than March. https://t.co/14mPIzFlan via @MattGSouthern, @sejournal
@sengineland Google is a for profit company. They will do what is best for their stockholders. When a better search engine comes around that takes enough visitors away to have a true impact on their PPC business, they will get the message. Until then we are all just part of the machine.
Listicles are the wrong type of content to create if you want to be cited by LLMs.
Sure, that's what marketers are focusing on right now, but many platforms, like Google, are also starting to combat the "listicle spam" we are seeing.
When we asked 500 marketers what types of content would perform best in the long run, listicles ranked number 3.
Original research ranked 1.
Google just had a major release to their AI agent Gemini. Gemini 3.5 Flash changes everything about how you search the Internet. If you rely on Google search for a lot of your business this is a must read article.

Only 38% of searches with an AI overview feature a top 10 ranking company in the Overview. I have checked this myself. On many occasions I have to go hunting for the website on a search page when the company itself is in the overview. More proof that AIs are looking for the answer to a question rather than the company or website supplying the answer.

@JoyanneHawkins@StefanSomborac I guess it helps to belong to BBB. I gave them up when their inbound links went no-follow. I may have to reconsider the investment.
Did you miss this last week?
My colleague @stefansomborac is back at the Local Search Forum sharing evidence that Google inherently trusts what the BBB has to say for US Based businesses
The takeaway? Be sure everything about your business is correct on your BBB listing!

Did you ever wonder how an AI chooses a local business to highlight in an internet search? I did. I wrote a blog about it and the results may be concerning to those that think marketing is all you need. https://t.co/tzobzlJLWW

This is from an email that Ben Fisher sends out. I think it's important to note. Most local businesses spend more time telling people what they do rather than who they are and what they believe in. What they believe in could be integrity, customer service, etc. Who they are is knowledge, experience, customer relationship satisfaction, case studies, etc.

@alexgroberman I take what John Mueller says with a grain of salt. A larger problem is that most AI searches are taking place on ChatGPT (Bing) when most SEOs concentrated on Google (Gemini).
