On display at Yad Vashem: the famous Hanukkah menorah belonging to the Posner family.
During Hanukkah in 1931, Rachel Posner, wife of Rabbi Dr. Akiva Posner, took this photo of the family Hanukkah menorah from the window ledge of the family home looking out on to the building across the road decorated with Nazi flags.
On the back of the photograph, Rachel Posner wrote in German:
Chanukah 5692
‘Death to Judah’ So the flag says ‘Judah will live forever’ So the light answers
Our tour guide informed us that the Posner menorah was getting continually damaged as it was still used by the family during Hanukkah. I thought to myself, ‘the damage is worth it, how deeply symbolic that the light still answers long after the flag is gone’.
The same evil embodied on that flag reared its ugly today in Sydney. But the light will always answer.
U allow people 2 maraud streets around the world chanting ‘2 globalise the intifada’ this is what happens - on #bondibeach our #Chanukah celebrations are unlikely to be free of fear or bring much comfort once again this year.
Gvnts & police have noone 2 blame but themselves
When Jews pray at a synagogue, their place of worship can be set on fire.
When Jews eat at a kosher restaurant, its windows can be smashed.
When Jews study at a Jewish school, they receive bomb threats.
When Jews visit a Jewish museum, they can be shot in the street.
When Jews stay home, they can be poisoned by a nanny.
When Jews gather peacefully to demand the return of hostages, they can be burned alive with firebombs.
And when Jews attend a Chanukah party on the beach, they can be hunted down and murdered like animals.
This is not a life. World leaders have allowed this to become our reality. Now they must act.
We refuse to live like this.
