āWe need to rest in a textās essential unavailability; it is meant, first and foremost, to rest in itself, to be its own thing, to be something unmanipulated. It is no mere resource.ā
Some thoughts on The Discourse⢠and what it says about the meaning crisis.
@lukeburgis@moveincircles It was actually the choice of ducks - instead of the more obvious sheep(le) - that caught my attention: I wanted to believe there was more than artistic licence going on in that decision! (And, a solid self might be labelled an āodd duck,ā so that worked as well)
Thinking more about this weekendās Mass readingsā¦.
The Church believes in predestinationābut not in the grim caricature many Catholics have been taught to fear. It means that before you ever sought God, Heād already willed to draw you into the life of His Son.
Thatās why grace can feel like discovery: a desire to pray, sorrow for sin, or the recognition that Christ is worth more than everything competing with Him. We remember when faith became real, but that wasnāt when God began acting; it was when we first noticed.
Predestination isnāt fatalism. Itās Godās eternal love taking shape in time, until the person who thinks heās found the hidden Treasure realizes that the Treasure has been seeking him all along.

@kalezelden Can confirm it really helps, even as a retiree living in a place folks pay to visit. (My personal theory is that the issue you raise was a big reason pilgrimages become so popular!)

āOh no great Odysseus, whatās the cause?ā
āDonāt be reductionist, Eurylochus. Thereās no single cause. Persistent stressors on the palace economies, seismic activity, migration, disruption to the tin tradeā¦ā
One of my favorite passages from Saint Bonaventure has the sciences organized into nine and correlated to different combinations of the three persons of the Trinity:
Father - Natural: Causes of Being
+ Father - Metaphysics
+ Son - Mathematics
+ Spirit - Physics
Son - Rational: Principles of Knowing
+ Father - Grammar
+ Son - Logic
+ Spirit - Rhetoric
Spirit - Moral: Order of Living
+ Father - Ethics (individual)
+ Son - Economics (family)
+ Spirit - Politics (city/society)
Some thoughts on this weekendās Parable of the Sower.
The four soils arenāt four fixed classes of peopleāand we practicing Catholics shouldnāt assume that weāre automatically the good soil.
Consider:
⢠A soul can hear Scripture, listen to preaching, and read spiritual books, yet never allow the Word to sink deeply within.
⢠Religious enthusiasm can be sincere and still remain shallow.
⢠Concern for the Church, the country, or the culture can become thorns when anxiety crowds out Christ. Even concern about genuinely important things can become excessive and disordered.
⢠Every heart may contain all four kinds of soil.
⢠Hardened ground can be broken open. Stones can be removed. Thorns can be cut back.
⢠Good soil doesnāt produce the fruit by itself. The fruit comes from the seedāfrom what Christ has planted.
The parable begins not with our receptivity, but with the astonishing generosity of the Sower. Every kind of ground can be cultivated by Christāeven ground that presently seems barren.
And so the question isnāt simply, āWhich soil am I?ā
Itās: āWhere has the Word taken root in me, and where do I still resist the work of the Sower?ā
Christ is still sowing the seed.
