Plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats to ocean health yet less than 5% of plastic is recycled worldwide. Majority of the plastic produced is for single use. Is the convenience really worth the threat? #EM203Mueller
@helenczerski Hi Helen! I’m currently working on a project which discusses the effects of plastic pollution in the ocean and I need an experts opinion. What do you think is a major contributing factor that results in plastic ending up in the oceans?

The Ocean

@MaxLiboiron Hi Dr. Liborin! I’m currently working on a school project discussing the effects of plastic pollution on the ocean and need an experts opinion. What do you believe is the number one contributor to plastic pollution/what type of plastic is the most prominent in oceans?
There is simply too much plastic being made for the world to dispose of it sustainably. We can't recycle our way out of this problem, we must reduce the amount of single-use plastic being produced.
In case you're wondering who is backing the mass production of single-use plastic. It's the same people that brought you oil spills, the climate crisis, and war.
We have the power to change the tide.

'One Asian country after another is shutting the door on waste plastic from US, UK, Australia.' Wealthy countries need to figure out how to deal with scrap at home. (Better yet, not produce so much waste in the first place.) #plasticpollutes

Speaking of unethical companies like Amazon.
Let's not forget that in 2017, Nestlé was paying $200 a year to take 150 gallons per minute in Michigan while people in Flint had no access to clean water.

Report shows plastic pollution is a threat to global climate mitigation.
US EPA reported that waste incineration released eleven million megatons of carbon into the atmosphere in 2015, and plastic waste contributed to more than half of it. #plasticpollutes
