It wouldn’t be Golf’s Longest Day without travel issues. Gagne one of seven players coming from Americas event in Mexico City who had their flight diverted, now flying into Miami this morning. Will be close!
The last time the U.S. Open came to Shinnecock, in 2018, Luis Gagne was co-low amateur with firefighter Matt Parziale.
Gagne was a rising senior at LSU at the time, and he’d go on to win four times in college, the same as former Tigers teammate Sam Burns, and turned pro in 2019.
Now 28, the Costa Rican native has been playing professionally for seven years, holding various status on PGA Tour Canada, Korn Ferry Tour and now PGA Tour Americas, though never on the PGA Tour.
Gagne has been a qualifying wizard, though, earning medalist honors at three different Q-Schools, plus qualifying for three straight U.S. Opens, in 2018, 2019 and 2021; qualifying was canceled in 2020. Gagne then lost in a seven-hole playoff to Carlos Ortiz at his 2022 final qualifier.
(There was also second stage of KFT Q-School in 2019, when Gagne was DQ'd for forgetting to sign his scorecard, as well as his 2018 U.S. Open local qualifier, where he advanced through a playoff on a coin flip because he and his competitor had left the course.)
“I’ve been really steady, but still waiting to have my breakthrough week,” Gagne said Saturday via phone from Mexico City, where he was competing in the PGA Tour Americas event.
Could Monday be the start for Gagne? It won’t be easy. Weather delays in Mexico forced Gagne to rebook to a flight that doesn’t land in Fort Lauderdale until 12:45 a.m. ET Monday. Gagne’s first-round tee time is 8:10 a.m.
“I’ll try and sleep for a few hours and then see if we can get hot again,” Gagne said.
If Gagne somehow gets through, it won’t even come close to the craziest thing that’s happened to him this year. He got married in February, then was supposed to honeymoon in the Maldives. But during the Gagnes’ three-day layover in Dubai, the Iran War began. While the Gagnes were in their hotel room, a drone struck the building across the street. They were rushed into the hotel’s basement, where they spent about 72 hours.
“We didn’t know when we were going to get out,” Gagne said. “You never want to be in that situation, but being in that, you realize how fortunate you are to live in U.S. and not have to deal with that chaos. It was pretty surreal.”
The Gagnes eventually got on a flight to South Africa and then back to the U.S. They’ve yet to reschedule their honeymoon, though. Maybe Long Island in mid-June?
The baggage doors are closed. I asked her if I get a refund or can be put on a later flight and she said no. Mean terrible service and no hospitality. Don’t ever fly @CopaAirlines in your life.
Meanwhile time was ticking. I finally get up to the counter and she starts to check me in and says she can’t because I have no return flight. I asked her what to do and she said don’t worry just buy a ticket. As I’m buying a ticket it finally goes through then she says sorry
. @CopaAirlines go figure found an airline just as bad as American if not worse. I was supposed to fly to Panama today but missed my flight due to terrible customer service. I got to the airport 2:30 hours before my flight left. They were on their phones taking their time
Do not fly @AmericanAir - they lose your luggage and make it their last priority to find it. They also offer no compensation for anything. Worst customer service #americanairlines
@AmericanAir But again - what is the excuse for the lost bag? I need my bag for work tomorrow and now have to cancel my meeting since my bags didn’t arrive.
@AmericanAir is officially the worst airline in history. Even @SpiritAirlines is better. Not only did I not receive any travel credit or voucher for a changed flight. They lost my bag and have no idea where it is. Don’t fly with them even if your life depended on it.
@AmericanAir Also - there was no agent anywhere to be found at baggage claim to help us. We had to find an employee at the airport to help which was no help at all.
Also - if u book on @AmericanAir and need to change your flight, Don’t bother. They will screw you. It’s 2022 - who doesn’t let you change your flight??? They offer absolutely zero accommodations
