@4sWeb hey I registered with a typo in my email >< and the panel I'm presenting at is starting >< >< can you give me any help to resolve this asap? thanks!
@SashaMTL I agree, the focus on operation emissions > embodied emissions appears to be the crux of the issue -- both in ML and in CS generally!
Gl on your research and thanks for pushing this important topic forward!!!
@SashaMTL i guess i wonder why? what new information do we need? (genuinely asking!)
from my POV, the answer is already apparent: ML is extremely hardware intensive and the waste/pollution of hardware is documented.
@SashaMTL My pleasure! :D its really quite upsetting... for those of us seeking to reduce the env damage of computing, we certainly have our work cut out for us ><
@SashaMTL this paper: Jennifer Gabrys. Digital rubbish: A natural history of electronics.
has some horrifying details such as:
“As much as 99 percent of materials used are discarded during the production process [of ICs].”
much of the discarded materials are extremely toxic
@SashaMTL Love this one -- the first graph is the weight of each component of a computer and the second is the embodied GHGe. Look at how ICs barely have a place in the weight of the devices but they take up SO much space in terms of GHGe! very troubling ><''
@SashaMTL also just wanna draw attention to the ppl who defend the pollution of hardware in this thread lol... when asking to quantify the carbon footprint already gets ppl to rush to the "defence" of ML is very... telling
@SashaMTL no connections to those companies but here is some research i have looked at while trying to answer the same thing

In my experience, every interview and article I've read in the @mtlgazette has been residents loathing or neutral about the Terrebonne bike path, and all from a very particular demographic (I'll let you guess which one)
Snarky answers to gender and ethnicity like "giraffe" and "turquoise" are not cute frankly should be considered a violation of the SIGPLAN Code of Conduct. Also who is this man speaking for queer women? Cut it out.
