A Shocking True Story.
"The Brand" ― American Society and One Religious Leader (by Dylan Otsuki)

A book about the American trial has now been published in Japan.

In 1982, a religious leader was sentenced to prison in the United States for tax evasion.

His name was Rev.Sun Myung Moon. Born in Korea, he had already become a highly visible in America.

He could have left the country and avoided prison.
Instead, he chose to stay, and walked into Danbury Federal Prison in Connecticut himself.

Why didn’t he run?

This book takes that question as its starting point. It carefully follows the course of the trial, the background of the indictment, and the political and media climate of the time, staying close to the facts.

His imprisonment sent a shock through religious leaders across the United States. Pastors who had been divided came together and took to the streets in protest.

Forty-four years later, the question still lingers.

At 83 years old, and in poor health,
Dr. Hak Ja Han continues to face prolonged detention and trial.

Throughout the proceedings,
her words carried no bitterness toward the public,
no accusation against the special counsel,
and no resentment toward the government.

It was neither retaliation nor resentment.

"I have dedicated my entire life to serving Heaven and realizing the ideal of one peaceful human family. I have never sought power through money. As the leader of the Family Federation, I deeply apologize for unintentionally causing controversy and trouble in many areas.

Throughout my life, I have emphasized that we must serve Heaven in order to realize a peaceful world through the True Family Movement, and I have lived traveling around the world to accomplish this. Therefore, it breaks my heart that the person I trusted and entrusted with everything has brought about the current situation.

Even now, as the world continues to be filled with the stench of blood from wars and conflicts, I cry out: Let us serve Heaven! I have appealed for all nations that serve Heaven to become brother nations, to welcome Heavenly Parents on earth together, and to become one so that we may realize Heavenly Parents’ dream of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.

I believe that Heaven is alive. Heaven will surely fulfill Its dream on earth. The second and third generations of the Unification Family, as true sons and daughters who serve Heavenly Parents, are advancing into the world to take responsibility for this work.

Centering upon April 2025, I have prepared the environment to realize the Creator Heavenly Parents’ dream on earth. This is something for which we should be deeply grateful. Now that the roots have been firmly planted, only prosperity and growth remain.

I believe that the long-awaited peaceful world of humanity—one family under Heavenly Parents—will surely be fulfilled.

Until the day my life comes to an end, I will continue to advance toward this goal, no matter where I am. I will pray that this nation, blessed by Heavenly Parents, will fully carry out its responsibility as the second Israel and chosen nation, and that its people will live up to that calling.

Let me say once more: An unseemly incident like what has occurred today must never happen again.

Dr. Hak Ja Han, the 83-year-old leader of the Family Federation, was arrested on September 23, 2025. After 300 days, she remains in custody today.

On July 10, at her final hearing, prosecutors demanded 13 years in prison.

Then she gave her final statement. It contained no attack on the special counsel. No attack on the Korean government. She testified God's dream and her lifework to make that dream into reality.

Assaulted by her own brother and thrown from the second floor — all because of her faith.

A female Family Federation believer was seriously injured and diagnosed with a coccyx (tailbone) fracture, head contusions, and traumatic subcutaneous hematoma.

The attack occurred when she returned to her parents’ home after the Tokyo High Court’s dissolution order on March 4.

Her brother’s room was filled with biased media clippings and books by longtime church dissolution advocates.

She had also previously suffered abduction and forced de-conversion by relatives.

'It’s a miracle I’m still alive,' she said.

This painful testimony shows how one-sided media reports can tear families apart.
Are one-sided media reports fueling such tragedies?

Japanese Supreme Court Rejects Defamation Claim Against Journalist Who Called Abduction Victim “Hikikomori”

Gotō Toru was abducted and confined for 12 years and 5 months (4,536 days) by anti-church activists attempting to force him to leave the Family Federation (Unification Church).

Note: This was not carried out by the church itself.

In 2015, the Tokyo High Court officially recognized the illegal confinement and ordered those involved in the abduction to pay him ¥22 million in damages. This ruling has been finalized.

Journalist Suzuki Eight repeatedly insulted Gotō by calling his ordeal a “hikikomori (shut-in) lifestyle” and claiming he “lived as a hikikomori for 12 years and then got 20 million yen,” including on national TV.

Despite the original abduction trial thoroughly confirming the facts with 8 witnesses and over 500 pieces of extensive evidence, the defamation case had no witness testimonies at all and almost no new evidence.

Gotō details his experience in his book “Battle for Survival: 4,536 Days in Captivity”.

This is a troubling development that risks trivializing severe human rights violations.

In 1991, the Soviet Union was in deep crisis and heading toward collapse.

Communist hardliners staged a coup to reverse Gorbachev’s reforms and preserve the old centralized system.

Rev. Moon had survived brutal torture in North Korea’s communist labor camps and knew the true nature of communism from personal experience.

In the Soviet Union, where atheism was the official state ideology and individual freedom was severely restricted, Rev. and Mrs. Moon made a remarkable proposal to Gorbachev.

They suggested bringing Soviet students to America so they could directly experience freedom and faith in God.

Their goal was not only to defeat communism, but to save the human beings trapped inside the system.

The Unification Church is a New Religious Movment that took off in the 50s in South Korea after the Korean War and quickly spread worldwide during the 60s and 70s before consolidating its present-day presence in the 80s Its main belief system revolves around the Divine Principle (a book btw), in which the world as we know it, human history, are the result of deviant human nature (corrupted desire as it would in Buddhism). The belief system goes on to explain how this deviant nature went on to create defective societies, completely out of sync with God. God then intervenes in human history to return things to an ideal state. Prophet and messianic figures come and go to mediate between God and people. The main trait of the Unification Church's belief system is in the Marriage Blessing, as one step closer to God in marriage where the focus is attending God in a similar way a Chrisitian wants to model Jesus. During the time that Rev Moon (the founder) was spreading his teachings, these started to get popular enough that many Chrisitians ' attendance would drop over time. This meant less revenue for the established Christian churches, and so they began to.cpjnter the new religious.movment with a narrative of brainwashing, sex rituals, and other unfounded claims. Eventually, these accusations leaked into the media, and deprogramming began (fear mongering, making anxious parents resort to kidnapping their adult children and try to change their mind by force about their newly acquired faith). Hence, there is so much media frenzy with titles like 'dangerous cult'. The reason the Unification church has come up on X is because of the media connecting the church with the 2022 Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Assassination (the assassination blamed the church on his family's difficult situation (a. No money b. Mental health problems c.unable to attend a university of his choice—all of which were proven to be issues linked to incidents before any of the family had officially become part of the church), and then more recently, raids on churches in South Korea. The raids were a pretense on charges of church meddling in politics (something not allowed in South Korea). Various church are affected, and trials to the church's co-founder are ongoing. So far, no guilt has been established

BREAKING: Today, prosecutors in South Korea asked the court to sentence Dr. Hak Ja Han to what, at age 83, would effectively amount to the rest of her life in prison.

That recommendation is not the court's verdict. The judges will issue their decision on August 31.

What struck me most today, however, was not the prosecution's request.

It was True Mother's own words.

After decades spent traveling the world advocating peace, reconciliation, and one family under God, she stood before the court and said:

"I have dedicated my entire life to realizing world peace for humanity. I do not seek power through wealth."

She did not speak about revenge. She did not attack her prosecutors or condemn Korea.

She spoke about attending Heavenly Parent, ending war, and leaving a better world for future generations.

Whatever one's opinion of this case, every democracy is ultimately measured not by how it treats the popular, but by how faithfully it upholds due process, fairness, and human dignity when they matter most.

The legal process is not over. The court has yet to rule.
Until then, I will continue praying for truth, for justice, for Korea, and for peace.
