Jarett Kobek did a (very) thorough review of the supposed 67 plagiarism infractions committed by Ross Barkan and nearly all of them turn out to be either not offenses at all or things like linking to an outlet but not naming it. (That's normal in today's world.)

In one case, he was accused of not linking to a Georgia Gee column, but instead he linked to a Reuters article he had already linked to higher up. Clearly, he meant to link to her there but somehow the Reuters link got in there. An editor frankly should've caught that. In a few cases, his language too-closely mirrored other articles, but in no cases did he steal anybody's ideas or pass off others' reporting as his own, which are the true felonious plagiarism infractions.

Like, is this plagiarism? Looks like NY Mag used AI for its analysis and never released the results, just canned the guy...

🇮🇷 NEW: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Tehran will not take further steps under the Islamabad understanding until the United States returns to its own commitments.

🔸 “The United States must return to its signed commitments so that Iran can also fulfill its obligations,” Araghchi said at the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting today, Sept. 1, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, according to Tasnim. “We will not take any action before that,” he added.

🔸 Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are both in attendance. Pezeshkian met Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin on the sidelines, and Araghchi has held separate meetings with other foreign ministers, including key US-Iran mediator Pakistan’s Ishaq Dar.

🔸 Araghchi said SCO members remain strongly interested in economic cooperation with Iran despite U.S. pressure, and that meetings in China emphasized opposition to Western unilateralism.

🔸 In a separate X post from the SCO summit, Araghchi said Iran had urged greater Eurasian, Chinese and South Asian unity to “manage [the] decline of an ailing Empire,” referring to the US, adding: “More than ever, the future is multipolar and multilateral.”

The SCO is an Eurasian political, economic and security bloc led heavily by China and Russia. Members include China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus.

⚖️ Yaakub Vijandre’s challenge to nearly 11 months in ICE detention can move forward after a federal magistrate judge in Georgia state rejected the Trump administration’s motion to dismiss it, his legal team announced Tuesday.

➤ Vijandre, a Filipino photojournalist and Palestinian-rights advocate, was arrested at gunpoint outside his Texas home on October 7, 2025. Initially held at Texas’ Bluebonnet detention facility, he was transferred to the Folkston ICE Processing Center in southern Georgia, where he remains detained now for nearly 11 months. His lawyers say he was targeted over social media posts that the government portrayed as support for terrorism.

➤ According to his attorneys, the judge rejected Washington’s argument that federal courts cannot hear his due-process challenge and said he need not wait for his immigration proceedings to conclude.

“The Constitution does not permit the government to lock people up because it does not like what they think or say,” attorney Chris Godshall-Bennett said.

Itamar Ben Gvir controls Israel’s police and prison system, including for Palestinians seized from the West Bank. As of August, Israel was holding more than 9,400 Palestinians, including roughly 370 children and 92 women. Over half are imprisoned without charge or trial, either under administrative detention or as unlawful combatants.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli and international human rights investigations have described those prisons as a network of torture camps: beatings, starvation, medical neglect, forced nudity, sexual assault, rape, and violence to prisoners’ genitals. B’Tselem says the abuse is systematic and comes from the top. More than 100 detainees have died in Israeli custody since October 7; Palestinian prisoners rights groups and B’Tselem have warned the true number is significantly higher.

The UN has concluded that Israeli detention facilities are characterized by “widespread and systematic” sexual violence and that sexualized torture, including rape, is carried out with explicit orders or implicit encouragement from senior civilian and military leadership. Its 2026 reporting verified sexual violence against Palestinian men, women and children, including rape, gang rape and rape with objects. Israeli forces have also filmed or photographed sexual abuse, including rape.

Dr. Adnan al-Bursh, one of Gaza’s leading surgeons, died in Israeli custody on April 19, 2024. A UN inquiry said it received credible reports that he had been subjected to sexual violence before his death and found him beaten, stripped from the waist down and unable to stand shortly before he died. Israel has still withheld his body.

And for nearly 35 months, Israel has not allowed the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit a single Palestinian detainee in its torture camps. Not one.

Nazi Germany, after 22 months of negotiations, permitted an ICRC delegate to enter Theresienstadt on June 23, 1944. The Nazis grotesquely staged and manipulated the visit to conceal what they were doing, but the visit took place. Israel, routinely described in Washington as “America’s greatest ally,” has continued to deny the Red Cross access to Palestinian detainees since October 7, 2023, despite repeated demands from the ICRC.

Through all of it, Washington has kept the heavy bombs, fighter jets and other weapons flowing. First, Democratic President Joe Biden armed Israel while much of the Democratic establishment looked away. Now Republican President Donald Trump continues to arm Israel. And a MAGA movement that built part of its identity around Christian values largely turns a blind eye to the systematic torture and abuse of thousands of Palestinians, including hundreds of children.

This is the imagery being promoted by Israel’s National Security Minister, a member of the country’s powerful Security Cabinet and a very close political ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
