Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. Please share this story, and also share your story, today is a very important day to raise awareness.

29th April 2011, Britain was ready for the Royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with security beefed up in London. The day was declared a public holiday which meant I had a shift at the nightclub. What happened that night changed my life forever.

I went to work, and I did not make it back home. I was arrested by the Police. It was reported that I ran into a minicab office, threw things around, and pulled the fire extinguisher off the wall. That night will mark the beginning of my 5 months admission at the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. I was sectioned under the Mental Health Act. First Section 2 and then Section 3 (Up to six months detention).

Some people would say I probably dabbled into drugs, but I never smoked anything or taken any substance in my life. My poor parents in Nigeria who couldn't afford to fly to Britain were devastated. I carried the hope of the family when I came to Britain to study a few years earlier, determined to break the shackles of poverty. I got my UK study visa at the 7th attempt of applying for several study visas.

Yorubas have a saying, “Were dun wo loja, sugbon ko se bi lomo” meaning watching a lunatic perform in the market is fun but no one wants to have them as a child. That stigma is heavy to carry. I hope we do better.

Mental health medication has huge side effects, and my weight ballooned. For several months I was on 2:1 observation. I would be on the verge of discharge and I would relapse again. I could not even imagine my parents' pain in those periods.

By the time I was discharged after 5 months, I had been evicted from my flat with all my belongings taken away. I couldn't believe how my life had turned out. I felt my visa refusals were warnings from God. I started playing my life back in rewind wishing I never travelled abroad. I suffered memory loss and I didn't want people to know, so I will always keep quiet.
I was suicidal, where would I start from?

After a while, I decided to take it one day at a time. Started training my brain back by writing things down a lot, I stopped comparing myself with anyone and started taking baby steps.

I went back to university at 30 (self-sponsored) and had all Distinctions in my first certificate course. I joined construction as a labourer and worked up to project management. It was a battle, but God proved to me nothing is impossible.

Mental health is like any other illness, I met men and women who were treated and got better. To the NHS staff and support workers, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

"It's Okay to Not Be Okay" Please seek help if you are struggling. You can start again. As long as you are alive, God has big plans for you. Please don't give up. Let us be kind to each other.
