@OldNewYork1664 I remember Tuckahoe in the 1960s before “urban renewal “. There was a section with Italian stores and grandmas in black. The Italian influence persisted later but ripping down shops was a shame. Still Assumption vs Immaculate Conception - Italian v Irish 😁
@Timstillherelol I have to say that whenever I visited Ireland, I was always treated very well by the Irish - including my own relatives. However I avoided Dublin and went into the country so maybe that was the reason. I never claimed to be Irish, just Irish American.
@timgill924 I was a librarian and once a student returned a book to me which I had recommended. She had used a yellow highlighter throughout the book. I stared at her - “this book doesn’t belong to you!” She genuinely couldn’t see what she’d done wrong!
@vbspurs I’ve always thought Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh looks very much his grandfather and this picture certainly shows it. When people say William looks like his uncle, I always disagree - different shaped head and nose. Just being bald doesn’t make you look alike!
@underdog1030@RachelVT42 Well I was taught with phonics. But then I had the privilege of being taught by nuns in parochial schools. Whole language garbage didn’t perchlorate through to us. We learned how to read with one kind nun and 45 kids. All learned and we used phonics.
@CitizenAmedia Kind of depended on where you lived. I first saw a Burger King in the mid-1970s and a McDonalds a few years later. This was the NYC area. We did have loads of pizza parlors where you could buy a slice and Italian and Chinese restaurants in neighborhoods. Not so much “fast food”
@HELLSBELLS828 I’ve never understood people who get worked up about having bits and pieces of an animal in their food. Why is a snout awful, but a rib ok? It’s like blood pudding - it just tastes good so why worry?
@underdog1030@RachelVT42 All the boomers I know learned with phonics. And we read books. What works is a combination. But leaving out phonics is ridiculous. We have an alphabet which stands for sounds - we’re not Chinese!
