After caring for this patient, washing her hair, and styling it into a ponytail braid, I played her favorite music collection. We did the same routine for my 3 shifts with her. On my last shift, I said my goodbye. It was hard because somehow I had gotten used to her non-verbal cues (while intubated), which she used to express her needs.
She held my hand with tears in her eyes and mumbled the two words- "Thank you." As she squeezed my hand, I told her she didn't have to struggle to mouth more words. I could feel her deep gratitude. These are the moments that remind me of why I still practice bedside nursing. For me, being able to care for people in their most vulnerable state is a blessing.
