A local planning think tank is blaming Chicago’s aldermanic tradition of hyperlocal control of what gets built and where for “standing in the way” of making housing more affordable. https://t.co/ppWDDvyjqJ
This is super fun, and I’m pretty sure the first time MPC research has ever been cited in a game! Particularly exciting because our full report came out this week, and this game is such a nice (inadvertent) companion. https://t.co/333SLjsjvK
Wow, this is an amazing little game! The policy options and effects have a really solid basis in research. Love the "myth checks" and "how to respond" to complaints. https://t.co/dJUOqk70vC
@DanielKayHertz I’m so, so sorry, Daniel. May his memory be a blessing. Your dad sounds like a truly remarkable person. (Incidentally, I ordered seeds for my garden last week, including tithonia. I’ll think of him when I plant them.)
Great example of how quick acquisition funds can help CDCs/nonprofits compete in market rate transactions for unsubsidized buildings & preserve them as affordable:
The city announced the purchase of 36 buildings in October, all of which will be placed into the newly-formed East Boston Neighborhood Trust. https://t.co/P2XmkBMz7V

It was such a pleasure to join Diane Limas from @CommsUnited to talk about the vital need to preserve Chicago’s 2-4 unit buildings. Thank you @miurbanchicago for the invitation & for organizing a wonderful & thought-provoking symposium!
We need to preserve 2-4 unit buildings in Chicago in addition to focusing on new building, says Emily Bloom-Carlin (@emilyblca) of @PresCompact. These buildings are currently one-third of rentals in the city & a source of affordable housing.
335 new ADUs have been pre-approved by @ChicagoDOB since applications opened on 5/1/21, Hertz says. Vast majority have been proposed for 2-6 unit buildings, which is exactly where DOH hoped they'd be.
Nearly half are owner-occupied, which Hertz says is "really encouraging."
These funds will leverage millions more to preserve dwindling SRO units across Chicago. This is one more tool needed to ensure that our existing affordable housing stays that way. Thanks to our partners at @cicchicago!
