Some videos have popped up across my various timelines about crosswordese, so as a linguist and a crossword constructor, I figured I'd (re)share my take on the phenomenon: https://t.co/Eu9jooiD4A
Recently I've seen some conversations about pain scales popping up, and was reminded that I should share this article I wrote about language, illness and measurement for @thesicktimes about a year ago: https://t.co/91kjffjBnH

it's been just over a decade that this paper won an award, and i remember i got the notification on april 1st and thought it was maybe an april fools' joke for a bit. maybe i should write an updated version: https://t.co/rM9ctsDXDj
It's wild to be applying for jobs and seeing questions that are straight up illegal. Asking "what country were you born in?" is fucking ridiculous and I reported the listing.

I found out that my time at Microsoft Research will be over soon, which means I'll be looking for new work in 2026! During my time at MSR, I got to showcase the importance of the social sciences in STEM fields. If your team (in tech or not) needs a linguist, reach out!
Really interesting/funny thing I've noticed -- on a few take-out menus in NYC, Splenda is spelled "Splender", so my assumption is that one of two things is happening:
Either the person making the menu is hearing some intrusive R stuff going on in people asking for Splenda, OR they're hearing people ask for Splenda, but making a (wise!) assumption that people are pronouncing it non-rhotically and adding in the "-er" at the end.
Super excited to announce that my paper, Taxonomizing Representational Harms using Speech Act Theory, will have a poster at #ACL2025NLP! I'll be presenting virtually on July 28th during Session 5. You can read the paper here: https://t.co/mJ2qlpMyux
