Social media has a lot of potential and has already been a force for good but we must remain vigilant about the ways in which our information is used for corporate or government surveillance. Transparency and knowledge is key. #INFO246w81
It is important for a library's data use policy to be clearly stated in multiple locations. Patrons often become frustrated when I can't provide titles checked out over the phone, but when I explain the WHY, they usually get it. #INFO246w74
Shares and likes provide insight into what the majority wants, but moving into more meaningful programming necessitates using tools such as "one minute views"- an individual may not attend due to schedule conflicts but recordings can increase accessibility/reach. #INFO246w718
@tgmlis I agree! We have found that a "one size fits all" approach really doesn't work for all of our community members. Anecdotally, when I was teaching citizenship and ESL classes, it seemed like word of mouth was the greatest promoter.
@laceykatx Hi Lacey, I agree. A lot of our patrons use an Alias for the Holds Shelf to ensure greater privacy, but the onus shouldn't be on them to come up with a solution.
@sjsu_chelsea Thanks for bringing this up. I agree that it seems irrelevant and is invasive. From what I can tell, our system does not collect this information.
@rebeccasjsu I like the idea of opt-in, which our library requires to view your checkout history, but it would be most helpful to have a simply-worded data use policy.
@librarianshabs That's a great point and one that I think our team often overlooks. Our Marketing team did just change its department name to Communications and has been working on this, though.
My library uses social media in different ways depending on the audience- Instagram is used most frequently by teen librarians, while Facebook tends to be directed toward a more general audience. #INFO246w620
My name is Emily and I live in San Antonio, Texas, where it is HOT hot. How hot, you ask? Today's high is 104 and we are under a Weather Alert. Here is a picture of my sweet daughter, who is learning to write. #INFO246w66
@sjsu_chelsea Oh wow! Yes, a great time to be leaving! My family in Virginia was telling me they barely broke 80 yesterday and I have to say, I was jealous.
