#Tucson had the privilege of welcoming @meghanor this weekend at the Festival of Books. Meghan had quite a line of fans after but I was able to make it to the front for a signing and photo-op and to thank her for her advocacy and journalism. Check out her work 📚 #hEDS#POTS
Lifestyle modifications and #nonpharmacologic approaches are essential, not just because they should be first line treatment, are low-risk, and are supported by research, but because they empower patients to #selfmanage and be active participants in their care. ALL should know.
@Dysautonomia@TODAYshow@ahandvanish@patientled Absolutely. When healthcare providers or (well-intentioned) loved ones echo the message that the patient just needs to work harder at recovery, it can be devastating when it doesn’t happen & patient feels a sense of failure. *Full* Recovery is not the norm, it is the exception.
The story was an otherwise great awareness piece, but we need journalists to avoid candy-coating the reality patients are experiencing b/c they want to give viewers a happy ending to the story. Instead, let's talk about the failure of @NIH to fund #POTS research for decades. 5/🧵
New research is confirming a link between COVID-19 and a debilitating heart condition called POTS, which can go undiagnosed for years. More here: https://t.co/51dkp8bALo
NBC’s @kristendahlgren reports for TODAY.
@TODAYshow@kristendahlgren Thank you for helping raise awareness about this autonomic nervous system syndrome (not heart condition). Lengthy diagnostic delays mean patients often suffer without answers for many years. Rehab therapists (OT, PT) have a huge role in functional gains https://t.co/PzUzIIgqfZ
@MVGutierrezMD Yes! This… followed by how many times do you wash your hair (for people with longer hair)? It’s amazing how many are sitting on the floor of the shower. #occupationaltherapy has such a role here. #longcovid
@OT_Skiff You’re too generous. Thank you for all you did to prepare this fantastic event!!! We will never know how many spoons you spent on this! 💞 Grateful.
@dysclinic Curious your thoughts on their conclusions re: internal vigilance (as compared to decrease in cerebral blow flow velocity)? Personally, I think both are likely contributing but wish they would’ve included more previous research findings - some pts have concerns of psych dismissal
