We're reflecting on progress we made alongside incredible partners to minimize the harm that #FinesAndFees have on young people & #Virginia families — and looking forward to our continued collaboration & future success!

You don't have to sift through all 230+ #VaBudget amendments proposed by the governor.
We've updated our "side-by-side" to show key proposals and how they compare to the gov's introduced budget & the budget passed by #VaLeg in March.

"Court #FinesAndFees for young people particularly harm Black youth, families & communities. A coalition of organizations across the Commonwealth & nation have banded together to end juvenile fees & fines in #Virginia... [There's much work] left to be done”
— TCI's @emilyslowrie
"It's clear we need to protect the historic investments made in the #VaLeg-passed #VaBudget & encourage lawmakers to reject all the harmful cuts the gov proposed. We'll continue to fight for a budget that lifts up all #Virginia families."

Data shows #FinesAndFees have always been inefficient revenue sources.
Sadly, they're effective at tethering people to the legal system because court debt can be collected for up to 60 yrs in #Virginia.

Good news for #FinesAndFees:
Bills to reduce time court debt can be collected to 10 yrs (HB857; @PhilforVirginia) and give judges discretion to charge youth w/ fines & fees in traffic cases (HB1264; @ireneshintweets) were considered this AM.
Both are off to the Senate floor! 🎉
A powerful piece from Marcus Jarvis on the harmful impacts of juvenile fines and fees. We have the opportunity this session to pass legislation abolishing this inequitable practice and break the chains of debt burdening Virginia kids and families. https://t.co/BhCbmiH6Vn
Happy Budget Sunday to all who celebrate!
Always an exciting day at TCI where we get to do one of our favorite things:
Analyze #VaBudget proposals and how they'll impact our communities.
Stay tuned for more!
Proud to support these efforts!
"Our legal system should allow people to grow beyond their mistakes rather than trap them in a lifelong cycle of poverty. These bills...will help more people in Va escape poverty & have greater economic opportunity." - @emilyslowrie#FinesAndFees
Reforming Virginia’s system of #FinesAndFees would help people escape poverty & have greater economic opportunity.
SB514 helps to accomplish this goal by reducing the time court debt can be collected — and it just advanced out of Senate Courts!

When your data is used on the House floor to show how upside-down the governor's tax proposal is and why we need to advance family-focused policies like improving the state's _refundable_ #EITC and creating a #CommonwealthKidsCredit
🔥🔥🔥
Today, I presented HB1263, a bill to eliminate court fines & fees for VA kids in the justice system. Wealthy families can afford to pay but low-income families get bogged down in a cycle of debt. The subcommittee recommended reporting & re-referring to Appropriations. Progress!
Sometimes the work-life balance is real. @fatehinorfolk pulls his car over and testifies on @ireneshintweets's bill to abolish court fines and fees for juveniles, with his own little juvenile waving hi from the back seat! 🥰
Youth #FinesAndFees are harmful to families and communities.
A House bill to eliminate fines and fees for young people is expected to be heard in subcommittee on Friday.
Here's what @emilyslowrie had to say to a Senate committee on the companion bill:
