"I told him he was wrong”
Deputy PM David Lammy says he spoke to US Vice President JD Vance about the American politician’s comments on “mass migration” and says “Western civilisation has always been open to the world”

Whatever the outcome of this committee hearing #Robbins is coming across as a brilliant civil servant - who is entirely in control of the facts, the sensitivity, the code and the principles of his job. And he is exposing the PM as a leader who either didnt grasp the facts, ignored smart advice - or has chosen to appear outraged when he should not have been.
20 years ago I was a candidate for the first time in an election, in the 2006 local elections in @LBofBromley.
Now I'm standing for re-election as a @BromleyLibDems Councillor for Bromley Town ward.

Work on the long-awaited pedestrian crossing in Homesdale Road between Mornington Avenue and Godwin Road in Bromley will start next Monday. Disruption is expected for up to 3 weeks with two-way temporary traffic signs in place. Godwin Road likely to be closed for some of time.
Bromley Council must do more to tackle empty homes in the borough. Figures highlighted this week show the number of long term empty properties, empty for 2 or more years, went up from 381 in September 2024 to 497 in September 2025 – a hike of 30%. Actions so far are not working.
@Keir_Starmer Unregulated service charges next please.
Companies like First Port are ripping people off with made up charges and when question/queried/complained, they ignore all communication. Vistry Homes selected them, not the residents, & they’re not accountable to anyone, which is wrong
@Keir_Starmer Excellent news...
Service charges need a cap too, or else we run the risk landlords will just add the loss of ground rent onto Service costs
@Keir_Starmer This is a very minor issue. Ground rent costs are minimal, even at £250, it’s still a significant charge for essentially nothing. The real focus should be on service charges, which are typically much higher and tend to increase year on year.
@nationalrailenq Now trying to squeeze onto a train from Sheffield to st Pancras. But you coordinate the tickets? Think a centralised hub the best place to ensure the right number of people on trains?
Completely shocked by #rail services going to #Manchester in the past two days. No direct trains from London. People think they are booked for particular times. But too packed to get on. Standing room only. But trains you could use to go via alternative routes almost empty. ...
@nationalrailenq I had even called the day before to change the time of the ticket. But at no point did the person I spoke to point out actually it was only a ticket for any off peak train you can manage to squeeze onto! Booking a time is meaningless! And people should be fully aware.
@nationalrailenq EMR. But tickets booked through you. Is there a way of only selling enough tickets that there is space for on particular trains. Also. People should surely be advised clearly even though they think they are booking a particular time their ticket is not for that specific train
This overcrowding on trains looks pretty dangerous me...Squashed in like a sardine - if you can get on, something you've paid a lot of money for sounds like rail standards going backwards, not forwards? A situation you have to endure for well over and hour - sometimes over two..
We've had a new report out into maternity and neonatal care and honestly... there's not a single surprise in it.
It's still - and I don't use these words lightly - a total disgrace. We've had multiple reports telling us this. And yet the same problems keep happening.
Women not being listened to - mums and babies being harmed or even dying - when they shouldn't be. So many people have their own stories - I'm sure if you're listening to this right now you might have your own story - or know someone who does.
There's one thing I wanted to pick out from the report by Baroness Valerie Amos.
The investigation heard cases of women who had lost babies being placed on wards with newborns.
This might seem like a little thing. But can you imagine losing a baby. The worst moment of your entire life. All those hopes and dreams for your child's future. Carrying the baby inside you - feeling it grow - and then the blood, the desperation that maybe it's going to be ok, surely it's got to be ok, and then the reality that you've lost your child.
And then what happens? You're put on a ward full of other mothers just like you... but these mums have their little babies in their arms.
That is not just negligent. It is cruel.
And it also happens systematically throughout the NHS. Having a miscarriage? Go to the maternity unit. Just had a scan where you'd hope to see your baby kicking but actually find out it doesn't have a heart beat? Go and sit down with all the happily pregnant mums.
This is symptomatic of a system where women are treated like vessels not like people who should be heard and listened to.
Because bringing life into the world can be the happiest time of your life. But it can also be the worst time of your life.
Either way - it's the most important moment. And that's why we've got to get this right.
