The latter is usually the case most of the time

Unfortunately again,before you realize the sacrifice the man made,and that slowly you have become what he used to be,and that you should have taken more time to embrace him,talk to him,and even ask for forgiveness,your father is usually long dead. And the cycle goes on.

If your father is still around,visit him and talk him. I am certain there are things he has wished he could say for years,dont wait for him to say them in his death bed.
