Kizza Besigye has been in detention since after he was abducted while in Kenya and later transferred to Uganda, detained, and currently faces treason charges. His case has since become a major regional human rights issue.
Martha Karua, Senior Counsel, party leader of the Peopleโs Liberation Party (PLP), has been involved in the legal defence of the Ugandan opposition figure. Her role has expanded from legal advocacy into a regional human rights battle involving deportations, legal challenges and international scrutiny.

KENYANS VOW TO MARCH TO KAMPALA IN NEXT 7 DAYS TO ORGANISE DEMONSTRATIONS IF BESIGYE IS NOT RELEASED IMMEDIATELY
FULL STATEMENT.
Nairobi, Kenya- The continued detention of comrade Dr Besigye alongside growing concerns over deterioration of his health is a matter of grave concern to Kenyans and East Africans.
We maintain that comrade Besigye was abducted in Kenya by Kenyans and Uganda security agencies. Those responsible for these unlawful arrests must be identified, named, arrested and prosecuted.
The abduction and detention of comrade Kiiza Besigye constitute a grave violation of the laws and fundamental rights. We therefore demand the immediate and unconditional release of comrade Kiiza Besigye and all other political prisoners.
If the Kenyans state can allow armed foreign agents to enter our country operate freely and abduct a politician from another country without accountability then no Kenyan or East African is safe. Kenya cannot become a hunting ground for political opponents of foreign regimes.
These are our demands
1. The immediate resignation of the cabinet secretary for foreign and diaspora affairs mr Musalia Mudavadi, the cabinet secretary interior Mr Murkomen, the cabinet secretary for defence madam Ntuya, and the Director general of National intelligence Service Mr Noordin Hajji for allowing and coordinating the abduction of Comrade Besigye and endangering Kenyans by permitting the armed abductors from operating freely within our borders
2. The immediate and full disclosure of everyone involved in the abduction of comrade Besigye including those who planned, authorised, coordinated, facilitated and executed the operation as well as the entire chain of command
3. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of comrade Kiiza Besigye by the Uganda regime, he must be allowed to obtain medical treatment from a hospital of his choice with the Ugandan state meeting the full cost of his medical care
4. A public apology and acknowledgement of criminal responsibility from Mr @WilliamsRuto and his regime for their role in the abduction of comrade Kiiza Besigye. We further demand that Mr Ruto and his regime join diplomatic efforts to secure the immediate release of comrade Besigye
5. The immediate withdraw of all charges against comrade Tundu Lissu by the Tanzanian authorities
6, The unconditional and immediate dismissal of the Ugandan Chief of Defense Forces Mr Muhoes Kanywerugaba over his alleged role in the abduction and detention of comrade Kiiza Besigye.
Our next course of action
If these demands are not met within the next seven days we will escalate our campaign, we will March to Uganda and organise nationwide demonstrations together with our comrades in Uganda to demand the immediate release of comrade Kiiza Besigye.
We will also pursue lawful arrest action against individuals responsibility for the abduction of comrade Besigye and demand that they face justice.
The Kenyan, Ugandan and Tanzanian state have chosen violence over the law, guns over democracy, torture over ideas and repression over justice, we will not remain silent while political leaders are abducted detained tortured and denied their fundamental rights.
The time to act is now, comrade Kiiza Besigye must be released, all political prisoners must be released, those responsible for these violations must be held accountableโ

So from more than two eye witnesses, the @PoliceUg spokesperson lied (not that itโs new) but;
1: Kizito wasnโt shot at 7:30am. He was shot at 6:50 as he rushed home to rest from night duty before the ridiculous cleaning curfew begins (not that shooting him at 7:30 would have been right because it is already outrageous that Ugandans are being killed for sweeping too!)
2: he didnโt attempt to force his way through any โsecured areaโ (was this a secured area for cleaning๐ค) and there was even no altercation between Kizito and the officer that shot him!
3: @mkituuma said the police was there to provide security during the cleaning exercise but it instead provided insecurity by murdering an innocent citizen, as the dwellers say the first cleaning exercise had gone smoothly with their chairman.
4: the person responsible for this exercise Prime Minister @R_Nabbanja and indeed government should say something about this reckless murder. We canโt disregard life like this and it becomes normal!!
As the lady rightly asks, the family of Kizito needs justice by bringing his killer to book and also the least government can do is to adequately compensate the family so that his children can be taken care of. #JusticeForKizito
