The house next door got foreclosed six weeks ago. I watched the family load up a truck and drive off without looking back. What they didn't take with them? Two dogs. That first night I heard it over the fence. Not barking. Just this low, broken sound. When I looked over, they were curled up together in an empty backyard. No food. No water. Just a plastic kiddie pool full of rainwater keeping them alive. I called animal control. Five to seven days, they said. These dogs didn't have that long. So I climbed the fence myself. The female lifted her head, still proud, but she didn't trust me — and honestly, why would she. The male just dragged himself over and collapsed at my feet. A neighbor saw the whole thing, ran over with blankets, called his vet, stayed with us for hours. The vet said another day or two and they wouldn't have made it. Now they're in my backseat, wrapped in blankets, refusing to eat unless they can see each other. I told myself it was temporary. It's not anymore. Whoever left them — they're safe now. Not because of you. In spite of you.
