A concern of mine is that everything in the Church is reflected through a certain political dialectic—if you want better preaching and liturgical celebration, you’re a conservative Trumpist only interested in clericalism (and therefore you’re anti-Francis). If you believe being pro life necessitates a certain consistent defense of human dignity, you’re some sort of progressive shill.

When we conform to this logic, we play into the logic of the digital world where the only posture toward everything is for and against.

When this is practiced by Christians, we have the birth of a new heresy—idolatry of a certain attenuated vision of politics. It is the erasure of freedom where thinking necessarily requires bending the knee to an ideology if you are to be pure.

Such is the opposite of the freedom of the children of God.

I was watching highlights from President Carter’s funeral service at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. I found some of the speeches very moving. But I was appalled when two country singers launched into a rendition of John Lennon’s "Imagine."  Under the soaring vault of what I think is still a Christian church, they reverently intoned, “Imagine there’s no heaven; it’s easy if you try” and “imagine there’s no country; it isn’t hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too.” Vested ministers sat patiently while a hymn to atheistic humanism was sung. This was not only an insult to the memory of a devoutly believing Christian but also an indicator of the spinelessness of too much of established religion in our country.
