In a surprising confession, the President of #SierraLeone admitted to rejecting calls from the American Embassy ( @USEmbFreetown ) to intervene and halt the Electoral Commissioner (@MKKonnehECSL) from announcing the outcome of a flawed June 2023 Election. This revelation further deepens the doubts surrounding his legitimacy. The Electoral Commission (@ECsalone) has sparked additional concerns by refusing to disclose the election results at the district level, despite calls from multiple pro-democracy organizations, development partners, and the main opposition party, APC. These developments seem to validate the suspicions held by many that the elections were indeed rigged.

If the president had the opportunity to ensure transparency but chose not to intervene, it raises questions about what other actions he might take to address the damages caused by the electoral coup d'état orchestrated by the Electoral Commission and Mohamed Konneh. Two days after another deadly protest that rocked Freetown, the capital of #SierraLeone, it is disheartening to see a recurring trend of an elite force being deployed to suppress and crush these demonstrations, reminiscent of past deadly protests. This force is composed of members of the state apparatus who were also alleged to be involved in the mass murders at the Pademba Road prisons. They disguise themselves with masks and exhibit a battle-like mentality, which bewilders us as we are not in a war zone. This scene evokes memories of the brutal civil war we endured in Sierra Leone.

As a #democracy, we expect the police to handle these matters, utilizing force only when necessary and within the boundaries of the law. Involving the military, such as the Presidential guards, in response to protests appears to be the formation of a personal elite force designed to combat perceived threats against the presidency. However, protests are an inherent part of our democratic process, and the police must take charge of managing them.

We hereby request a thorough investigation into the killing of protesters once again. We cannot continue down this path of violence and suppression. If the @USgovernment can admit its failure doesn't mean they are a failed State but it's a stepping stone to seek redress for its failures. That's what I called a step towards improving a nation to fit its citizens livelihood.

@StrategicComm There are pressing issues to address which will remedy protests and demonstrations eg., the bread and butter, prices of commodities and services, exchange rate, unemployment etc.

Sierra Leone's security forces have once again failed the people by resorting to violence during protests, with reports of arrests and alleged summary executions. The government must bring the perpetrators to justice to show they are not complicit in the killings of protesters.
