@davidshorter @lportwoodstacer Seconding this, and I would add that communicating with the editor could provide an opportunity to gauge the journal's commitment to seeing the process through in a timely way. If they express that they are taking active steps to expedite the process, it's a good sign.

@SciCommClub @LoriPalenPhD That term refers to the editors whose job it is to find manuscripts to publish. At many presses, editors wear lots of different hats, so many acquisitions editors do other kinds of work, too! But when you look at publishers' websites, they often list the acquisitions editors.

A question for scholars and other writers of research-based nonfiction who strive to reach readers outside their disciplines and/or academia: What are your reasons for wanting to do this?

I love working with authors who write for audiences beyond a particular sub-field. At its best, the work that emerges from this effort is capacious, generous, and creative. (That’s not to say that writing for a more targeted audience can’t also be compelling and impactful!)
