A historic milestone has been reached following nearly two decades of negotiations.
Negotiators agreed on the text for new legally binding agreement that aims to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction.
The ecological crisis is not about “consumption” in some abstract sense. It’s about who controls the system of production, how they use our resources (& labour!), and to what ends. It’s about who wins and who suffers. It’s about class. It’s about imperialism. It’s about power.
We are hiring for an exciting #PhD position on developing and applying novel energy system modelling methods. Join our lively and diverse group at TU Delft to work on accelerating the energy transition! https://t.co/8SoMrrMTDr
"These mathematical “phantastic objects” are great works of logic but their outcomes are relevant only in model-land until a direct assertion is made that their underlying assumptions hold “well enough”"
[Think, globally harmonised carbon price, & what we 'need' for 1.5°C!]

Super excited for this initiative at TU Delft! Interactive theatre is a great tool for fostering empathy and getting the conversation moving on #diversityinacademia.
Discussing sketches: ‘trivial incidents’, all drawn from life, in which a woman academic is confronted with implicit bias. #implicitbias#womeninscience Unravelling the phenomenon of Implicit Bias today with @HetActeursgeno1. The second Theatre play starts at 14.00h @tudelft

Even big projects that have different types of models, EMF36, may only consider CO₂ or run to 2050, meaning they do not get a climate assessment (category C1, C2, etc), which means they are excluded from much of the IPCC analysis.

Can we reach carbon neutrality *and* energy self-sufficiency in Europe? Not only we can, but there are also *hundreds* of ways to do so. Which ones? Check them out yourself at https://t.co/KzWzsblyyq. All the details in the thread @bryn_pickering who led this massive study!
Congratulations to @gxexakis@UNIGEenergy @unige_ise @unige_en for successfully defending his PhD thesis last week on desirability and usability of #energy and #climate mitigation scenarios! 🧵 1/7
“Both government and the public need to be better equipped to discuss difficult trade-offs and uncertainty. People need to know what counts – what value framework is being used to weigh up competing risks and benefits and make trade-offs between them.”
The average technical lifetime of #metals is depressingly short, < 10 years for many specialty metals.
The environmental impacts of their production, however, will last for millenia!
THIS is un-sustainability.

Everything we think we know about the world is a model. Every word & every language is a model. All maps & statistics, books & databases, equations & computer models are models. So are the ways I picture the world in my head… None is or ever will be the real world. - D Meadows
On #EarthDay, let's remember the unfairness of sacrifice zones, where pollution is affecting people in disproportionate ways.
One of these zones is Sarnia, Canada, notorious for its disturbing health effects on the Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
