A man married a 17-year-old child, and we’re laughing like it’s nothing! Every day we talk about child marriage, but we’re laughing at this one because “when she was enjoying, did she call me?” or “she laughed at us when we cried for help.” The deed has already been done, so can we just stop? A man close to 60 married a 17-year-old child. She was a CHILDDDDD. Everyone around her failed her, her mother, her brothers, everyone. Those saying “she’s there for the money,” let’s stop. At 17, you cannot make life altering decisions like marriage. She had no business being in that situation.

To the mother who allowed this: you failed her.
To the brothers: shame on you all.
To the elders in her family who allowed this: big shame.
To Nigeria’s authorities: Y’all never cease to amaze me. The corruption, the abuse of power, the random detentions! This is not right.

And to the husband: Sir, yes, you’re powerful. Yes, your ego has been bruised. But what satisfaction do you get from threatening to jail your mother-in-law or using your wife’s brother’s arrest as leverage? You married a teenager and now act surprised at the outcome. All these drug allegations are excuses. Let her go. Marriage is not by force.

This child could be your granddaughter! You’re a senator nearing seventy, where is your sense of decency? “She’s a druggie, she’s this, she’s that”, Enough! Stop the excuses. Don’t deflect. She said she’s not interested in the marriage anymore. Let her go! Marriage is not a prison, and you’re not her father. She has one. You’re approaching 70! She could be your granddaughter. She could be your daughter! Sir, where is your dignity?

You’re a sitting senator! You’re supposed to be building Nigeria, not destroying it. Is this the Nigeria you promised?
