I had always wanted to study Pharmacy for my undergraduate degree, preferably at the University of Ibadan (UI). Life, however, took a different turn, and I ended up studying Pure and Applied Biology with a major in Microbiology.
During my undergraduate years, I discovered that Pharmaceutical Microbiology was available at the MSc level. That gave me hope. I thought, at least I can still find my way into Pharmacy through graduate studies.
Fast forward to the time I was about to purchase the UI MSc form. I spoke with one of my academic mentors, and his advice was straightforward: Don't attempt it.
He explained that the system was so rigid that even if I completed a master's degree in Pharmaceutical Microbiology, many in the pharmaceutical sciences would still judge me based on the fact that my first degree was not in Pharmacy.
Instead, he advised me to pursue Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, arguing that it would provide broader career opportunities. I trusted his judgment, and today, many years later, I remain grateful for that counsel.
Yet, I still believe our institutions need to embrace the flexibility that knowledge demands.
People's interests evolve. Career paths change. A student's undergraduate degree should not become a permanent barrier to exploring a different field.
If someone wishes to transition into another discipline, institutions can simply require foundational courses to bridge the knowledge gap.
At the graduate level especially, research ability, critical thinking, and scholarly output matter far more than the title of one's first degree.
Interestingly, after completing my MSc, my next admission was into Pharmaceutical Sciences. The admission committee did not dismiss my application because my undergraduate degree was different. Instead, they simply checked whether I had the necessary prerequisites.
One of the courses they requested proof of was Differential Calculus. I confirmed that I had taken it during my first year as an undergraduate, but I needed evidence. I contacted one of my mentors, who went to the Mathematics Department, obtained the curriculum, and sent it to me. I forwarded it to the school, and that was it. For the pharmaceutical courses I had never taken, they simply listed them as prerequisite courses.
This is an evolving century. People move across disciplines all the time, bringing fresh perspectives that often drive innovation. Preventing capable people from changing direction simply because of what they studied years earlier is an outdated way of thinking.
Unfortunately, this rigid mindset still exists in many of our institutions. It fuels unnecessary gatekeeping and unhealthy rivalry instead of encouraging collaboration and interdisciplinary growth.
I sincerely hope the day comes when our educational system values competence, curiosity, and the willingness to learn above rigid academic labels. When that happens, our institutions and the people they produce will be much stronger for it.
