What people think Zinc is for:
- Immune system
- Testosterone
- Acne
What it's really for:
- Cofactor for ~300 enzymes
- DNA synthesis
- DNA repair
- RNA transcription
- Glucose metabolism
- Creating glucose from proteins & fats (gluconeogenesis)
- Pentose phosphate pathway regulation
- Fatty acid synthesis / Acetyl-CoA carboxylase
- Nutrient sensing/signaling
- Amino acid synthesis
- Modulates immune response via cytokine production & action
- Development of T cells
- Inhibits viral replication 😷
Hormones:
- Synthesis of sex hormones, particularly Testosterone,
- Androgen receptor binding and transcription
- Inhibition of aromatization (testosterone to estradiol conversion)
- Facilitates conversion of thyroid hormone T4 to T3
- Acts as a signaling molecule for insulin secretion
- Facilitates melatonin synthesis
Skin:
- Facilitates collagen synthesis
- Anti-microbial properties, including against P. Acnes ( bacterial source of acne)
- Inhibition of 5AR in human skin cells, reducing sebum production
- Structural component of various cells, including skin
Could keep going, but we'd be here all day
Zinc is an essential piece of the superhuman puzzle
The best dietary sources:
1) Oysters (3 - 4 oysters and you're good for the day)
2) Beef
3) Lamb
4) Chicken/Turkey
5) Fish
Avoid beans/legumes and greens as a zinc source as they contain phytic acids, which inhibit the absorption of zinc
If you are supplementing with zinc, you will get much better absorption on an empty stomach, although you may get some bad nausea
The RDA is 11mg per day for men and 8mg per day for women
However, there's a few things to note
1) bodyweight, physical activity, copper & iron status, immune status, etc play a bigger role
2) not all zinc sources are absorbed equally
3) RDA doesn't necessarily mean optimal, rather it's the minimum amount needed to not have a zinc deficiency
4) Zinc and copper share common transport proteins, so excess zinc intake should be balanced with more copper intake
5) I like to shoot for a 10:1 ratio of zinc to copper and keep a copper bisglycinate supplement on hand
6) There isn't much of a reason to supplement zinc outside of achieving specific goals (ie fighting a virus, height maxxing when young, cognitive enhancement, fasting, etc) if you are eating a proper whole foods-based diet with sufficient animal protein (1g/lb bodyweight)
Leave questions in the comment, and remember, none of this is medical advice. Talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement or diet program.

GADDAFI (2009): "We joined the United Nations because we thought we were equals, only to find that one country can object to all the decisions we make. Who gave the permanent members their status in the Security Council? Four of them granted this status to themselves.
The only country that we in this Assembly elected to permanent member status in the Security Council is China. This was done democratically, but the other seats were imposed upon us undemocratically through a dictatorial procedure carried out against our will, and we should not accept it."
