At the Olympics in 1992, there was a track and field event where a runner tore his hamstring halfway through the 400 meter race. He was collapsed on the track when a man from the stands pushed past security and came running from the stands and onto the track, where he picked the runner up and took him to the finish line.

After the race, the reporter Mitch Albom asked him: “Why’d you do that?”

The man said something like: “I’m his father. My son’s dream was to compete in the Olympics, and I knew that if he didn’t cross the finish line, he wouldn’t be recorded as having participated in the Olympics.”

“But why’d you put him on your feet.”

The father replied: “Well when he was a little boy, I taught him how to run. That’s how I taught him. By putting his feet on my feet.”
