We don’t need designers anymore.
Claude does the UI now..
I was in one of those awesome and somewhat heated conversations the other day, speaking with a dear friend of mine about AI, tech, and the meaning of life.
And after maybe an hour of ever so heated back and forth, he dropped the bomb.. I’m not gonna lie, it hurt a bit inside. But not because the assumption was that designers were being replaced by beautiful front end mass “printed” by a machine. It hurt because this amazing senior engineer, with a long and successful career behind him, still thought that the task of designers was to provide developers with something they could code.
There are over 5,000 decisions in every screen that is designed. That’s what “design” is built from. Sure.. drop shadows, and fonts, and colors.. we can get that from a template. But there are also decisions about framing the challenge, perspective, empathy, taste, jobs to be done, the journey, the right information architecture, priorities..
I have been working with AI long enough to understand that UI, even nice UI, even consistent UI, is easy to produce. But the rest of those 5,000 decisions don’t just need human judgment. They need proper design.
It’s our fault, for sure. Our job was to communicate that story. I thought UX did a decent job with that, but it looks like it’s still a bit of a subjective mystery to part of the industry.
Design is not what you see. It’s the 5,000 decisions underneath. The process that transforms a bunch of figures, buttons, shapes, and boxes into an experience that is easy for our users to understand, meaningful, and valuable.
Design is how it works, not just how it looks. And because of that subjective and emotional layer, it is also one of the harder jobs for AI to automate.

What if.. Service as a Service? 🤔
Tools get better. Code gets faster. Results are still hard
Maybe the value is your system. Your own way of solving that problem. Human, present, accountable
Your system is the product.
Scale comes later.. https://t.co/grg5DubAho
After years of smoothing out software friction, the next frontier may be making it more relatable.. more ours
Say hello to Macchi! A tiny retro pet for Codex/ChatGPT, inspired by the original 1984 Apple Macintosh.
Version 2 has live! A bit more polished, livelier, a touch more quirky, and definitely smiling :)
Thanks to everyone who sent a note, and a huge shout‑out to the @OpenAI team. They make experiments like this super fun!
