H@te posts and b0ts/Fake accounts - Why we shouldn’t engage with these

We have seen in the past years, especially the last couple ones, an increase of fake accounts and “bot accounts”. This is because it became much easier to buy this type of service, including likes, and even rts and qrts.

There are 2 main reasons why these are used, especially in our fandom:
1. Revenue
2. Create dissemination

In more detail:
1. Revenue:
It all starts by planting the seed: mentioning a popular subject. In our fandom, we know it’s our boys. Ever wondered why it seems it’s always them getting h@te? Why is their name always mentioned even when others are also present in events or done the same activity? Why is it controversial when with them, but normal and dismissed with others?
Because they are popular. Anytime their name is mentioned it will trigger views/impressions. People will check.

Why hate posts then? Why not positive posts promoting their favs? Because negative posts receive more engagement than positive, this is called Negativity Bias, a psychological phenomenon where negative stimuli are given more attention than positive. So we have:

➡️Popular subject + Negative post (rage bait) = views/impressions⬅️

Premium accounts can start receiving Ad revenue if they meet the following criteria:
Have 500 verified followers
Have 5 million organic impressions in the past 3 months

B/ots are bought to become followers, and also verified accounts can be bought. So what do those ppl need from us? Views.
Whenever you go check a post, you give them views and impressions, even when sharing SS, those who see it feel compelled to go to the original account and see the post themselves, which means more engagement.
These posts will not trend if no one is looking at them.
But if there’s engagement, then the person will make money out of it. They will get money out of you being upset!

These people don’t even care about the fandom, they can be making posts literally just for making money, they might not even h@te anyone, this is just a job for them. Same with fanbases some dont’t even care like that BT5 spotify stat who admitted they didn’t care about the group they just wanted to make money. (image below)

2. Dissemination/mediaplay
Ever notice certain rumors start when specific situations are happening? Then tons of accounts appear out of nowhere talking about that? All with the same wording as well?
All it takes is impressions for the topic to trend, so companies and/or fandoms/fanbases or even individual users purchase batches of b0t accounts (bot farms), that can cost very little per account (a tiny bit more for verified ones) and have them respond with key words and phrases. They can rt and qrt too.They can mass like as well.
Likes can be bought too, and can easily be spotted considering the view like ratio.
The use of b0ts creates a false idea that there are many people who agree or disagree with something. Right now, it is estimated that 4 in 5 accounts are b0ts in this app, 80% are fake! Consider this, for every 5 accounts you engage, only 1 is probably real. Engaging these is not only a waste of time as there’s no one behind but also will add more fuel to the flame and make the truth harder to notice as they trend with those impressions.

❗️How can we spot a b0t or fake account?
- Generally no photo, username is just name and a bunch of numbers. Use of the same response to several posts on that topic. Some even “talk” with each other to make them seem legit.
- No personal info on what are their tastes, just very generic topics or nothing
- Fake accounts generally have a human behind it (image below to give an idea), they also have generic photos/no photo and username with numbers and tend to post always about the same thing. Example, only h@te against one member or gg or everyone from a specific label, etc… These are people who are paid to do this. So it doesn’t matter the ad revenue (some may care), as the goal is to make noise and create a false sense and take the opinion of ppl somewhere else. This is super common in our fandom.
- They only make one response and don’t go back. They bait, get responses, but don’t ever answer to them. There are many “popular” antis who do this.
- Repetitive response, same over and over again.
- If the account is recent and is only focused on one topic, then it’s a red flag.
- Very few followers and those followers also have generic usernames or no photos (they follow each other)
- Tons of posts on unrelated and different types of topics. One can like many things, but when there are comments about literally every type of thing you can imagine, it’s not typical behavior. The algorithm feeds us what we see the most, so it’s odd when the content is too diverse.

➕Additional insights:
* The like/view ratio is normally 1-5%. This means a normal post as in average 1 like per 10-25% views. So if you see a post with 1000 views and 500 likes, most likely these were bought.

* A recent account with very few posts, but hundreds or more of followers and barely any posts is also suspicious.

* Accounts are often sold, so check regularly those you follow and if they still have the same owner.

*Payola group chats exist, and boost the b0ts deployment. There's massive increase in certain topics because they are planned in advance.

* The revenue part also applies to those gossip/media(if you can call that) accounts like p**nch** and k*r*ab**

* A lot of big fanbases are bot/fake accounts

* There's evidence of antis planning the creation of fake accounts, pretending to be someone's stan and engage on bad behavior to bring shame to that person and their fandom (DC gal exposure)

There can be real h@ters out there, but they are a miniscule particle in the fandom, barely noticeable, so that’s why they use fraudulent methods to spark a reaction, make you enraged and engage and then make money out of it, and take away attention from what they don’t to spread while going after someone they don’t care/competition.

Please be smart with your reactions and also be mindful of who you follow as these can be everywhere!
