@Juche_Gang in openly left spaces, he's much less cagey and has frequently defended communism. you can view this as inconsistency but I think that's missing just how useful it's been, even if he's a reformist at the end of the day.
@Juche_Gang here he's on a left-sympathetic liberal platform, and his goal is to make the "radical communist" label that's been assigned to him seem overblown, so he talks about communism as being a noble goal. this is how liberals understand it, they simply also think it's naive.
@GoodVibePolitik I think the NYPD has politely informed him that he'll be putting them on twelves and he better pretend like it's his idea or else. they are genuinely a more powerful political force in the city than the mayor's office.
@ipatrol6010@aaron_says@barbarismcrit the NYPD is a de facto military and they're not going to be defeated by outgunning then. beyond this, I don't think it's in the mayor's interests to spark a gang war on his streets. that's a cure worse than the problem.
@ipatrol6010@aaron_says@barbarismcrit you can invent a justification for it, but where are you finding the equipment, facilities, and people? how is the new force being trained, and by whom? what do you do when the NYPD (and the feds) swoop in to intimidate/poach your trainees?
@barbarismcrit the cope version of events is that he's focusing on building public goodwill so he has a stronger position to fight back against them later down the line. I don't know if I buy that but it's not impossible. the more likely answer is that he'll get captured by party politics.
@barbarismcrit this is not intended as excuse-making but I suspect the armed cartel of the NYPD has him by the balls. he can fix up the civic end no big deal, but if he tries to interfere with "police business" there's no end to the trouble they'll give him.
@RustyBarstow@MattPolProf exactly 0 of these points are socialist. barely a handful of them even passively resemble socialism. regardless, we don't need to look at Hitler's words to imagine what he might do. we can look at what he did, and what he did wasn't socialism.
@kihelpata good dunk but rewinding is far too clumsy of a tool to actually enable the type of jumping back and forth that a reader engages in. and let's be fr, no audiobook listener is doing all that. the point of the audiobook is to be a frictionless background experience.
@Vanessa_ABee a vital component of reading is the ability to skim, to backtrack, to linger over a sentence of particular beauty. braille permits this; audiobooks do not. if someone stared at a screen on which the words of a book flashed before them in order this would also not be reading.
@marindatanow I'm fine with criticizing Hasan from the left, and also think that he should be much less open to Platner, but this is rank conspiratorial nonsense and I lose faith in anyone who takes it seriously.
@marindatanow okay but this is insanely intellectually dishonest. "he's in contact with the Zohran campaign" turns into "he's in contact with a consultancy group attached to the campaign" turns into "he's aligned with the consultants who run the campaign" turns into "he works for Democrats".
@alz_zyd_ it's not mathspeak, "you can get arbitrarily smart" is just clumsy and ironically the sort of sentence construction that reading books teaches you to avoid
@TneinSpines@parandeye_zard@FusionEDC dog. she is not just "some lady i don't like". this is why i joined the conversation, because people were being unbelievably stupid about an obvious crank.
