🔥Ground Ladders: Moving Beyond Minimum Standards
⭐ Instructor: Clay Magee, Lieutenant - Birmingham Fire and Rescue
🗓️ Wednesday, April 22
⏰ 3:30 PM
Are you looking to grow your ground ladder game and knowledge? Ground ladders are more than shiny ornaments on the side of your rig. All firefighters need to be proficient in what is a basic skill. This class will help you elevate your ground ladder game beyond academy minimum standards. We'll review the basics of ground ladders; construction; standards; basic use for work and victim rescue; and nonconventional use of ladders such as splicing, scaling, and alternative heeling. This class will introduce new tips and tricks learned from the real world. It's not just for the truckies but also for the engine folks who may show up first due to that victim waiting on rescue.

"Around 73% of all calls the Annapolis Fire Department responded to are for emergency medical services" - so, is this still a Fire Department? Seems to me that they need a new name. #EMS https://t.co/OEmE4eTrKY

⭐Moving Forward While Riding Backward: Essential Medical Skills for the Firefighter/EMT
👨⚕️Instructor: Will Ferguson, Medical Director - Birmingham Fire and Rescue
📅 Thursday, April 23 at 8:30 AM
The EMT has been the backbone of EMS since its inception, but it is not an "entry level job," as it brings with it responsibility, accountability, and an ever-growing scope of practice and required knowledge base. With the ever-changing landscape of EMS, more patients being treated at home and not in the hospital, and the workforce shortage of paramedics, the "basic" EMT is not so basic anymore. And if you have not noticed, the fire service is now EMS. This class will cover topics including practical understanding of relative anatomy, pathophysiology, history taking and scope of practice skills, and interventions that will aid personnel in fully using their skills to enhance patient outcomes.
⭐Urban Toxicology
👨⚕️Instructor: Will Ferguson, Medical Director - Birmingham Fire and Rescue
📅 Friday, April 24 at 10:30 AM
Toxidromes can be used to readily identify potential toxins and then hopefully refresh your memory on their needed life-saving interventions. However, unfortunately, one of the most fatal toxidromes is seen with acute lead poisoning. This class will cover cases from the first year of a prehospital whole blood program, covering numerous cases from the street to the stretcher to the OR and lessons learned along the way. It will discuss traditional teachings on trauma recognition and management that may have led us astray from our role in the prehospital salvage of the trauma patient. This will be a charismatic, case-based discussion on ways to recognize and rapidly treat both hemorrhagic shock and other life-threatening injuries or urban toxidromes.

⭐Laying the Foundation: Growing Paramedic Numbers Through Strategic Development
👨⚕️Instructor: Melissa Stuive, Chair of Public Service Del Mar College - Del Mar College
📅 Thursday, April 23 at 1:30 PM
With critical staffing shortages across fire departments, this class explores an innovative yet historically grounded solution: streamlining the path from civilian to paramedic by integrating EMT training directly into educational curricula. Drawing inspiration from the pioneering Freedom House Ambulance Service and the long-standing success of Delaware's fast-track paramedic cohorts, this presentation outlines a strategic approach to increase paramedic numbers without compromising quality. Attendees will gain insight into pilot programs already underway in Texas, the potential impact on recruitment and retention, and actionable steps for implementing similar initiatives in their own regions.
