#Markets | It's exactly 6 years since I developed passion for goat 🐐 projects, for dairy and chevron/cabrito

UNLIKE today, the demand was not as pronounced as it is now, infact in 2018 on my first market search,

I bumped into one of the BIG buyers in the UAE🇦🇪, the agent wanted exactly 200 goats per week, my friends in farming and some few farmers had those numbers and it was easy to supply, directly from Zimbabwe

Moving to 2021 the demand grew a bit bigger to 2000kgs weekly, and unfortunately the supply from Zimbabwe became a challenge, and soo they moved ro Kenya 🇰🇪,

As of last week I received a request for atleast 25 tonnes weekly, it's a big challenge which majority of farmers can not accept

Would you be able to accept the challenge?

If you look at one of my February articles, you will realise that I was encouraging the farmers who love livestock to consider the goats for a lot of reasons and this is one!

I of course knew that this moment would come!

Now when it comes to a lot of individuals with farms, as soon as we mention numbers,

Especially when it comes to livestock numbers, most farmers are OBSESSED…

With all the wrong things. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Numbers like how many animals per hectare, if possible how many of sheep, goats beef or dairy cattle can fit on the available land,...?

How many livestock units to begin with don’t really matter much at this moment

So what numbers SHOULD you be focusing on when it comes to investing in agribusiness?

Looking at Last week, whilst doing land capability analysis for an land use plan in Mutare we had a situation that demanded us to come down to numbers, having looked at all other contributory factors, it all came down to numbers of goats 🐐 that would fit in the 168ha specifically left out for livestock!

That's where the economic use of pastures kicks in, where as the farmer wanted more of dairy and even though I'm a big fan of it, there was no way we could outpace the resources which naturally were in favour of goats,

Of course there are a lot of considerations before arriving at this, and all that is equally important!

Without a land capability analysis & land use planning, a lot of farmers are losing a lot from the businesses they themselves might not know that they're way too profitable to miss!

But not only that, some are actually operating at or below 10% of their capacity, it's possible because they themselves do not have a system in place to measure their potential or better still the viability of their enterprises!

Right now I'm talking about the availability of goat markets, a lot of farmers might still nose dive into this enterprise without the full understanding of what is required let alone the feasibility of the project at the farm,

Sustainability and growth strategy for the farm,

In as far as we prefer to cover this in our land use and management planning,

It's also important to understand where you want to go as a farmer and your vision ✨️
