I’m Sian, a birder and wildlife lover from North Shropshire and youth representative for @_BTO!
This account has been set up to promote the work and events of young people in the county, and we’d love for birders in Shropshire and beyond to help us spread the word! 🦆
Hi my name is Ellie and I’m the Shropshire Ornithological Society’s Youth Engagement Officer! I’m a trainee bird ringer in Shropshire and a retired @_BTO Youth Advisory Panel member. We want to connect and promote young naturalists so please follow us and spread the word 💚🦅
Me, @_JoshHill_ and @sianmercer are doing a talk on youth engagement in birding this Wednesday for the Shropshire Ornithological Society and we’d love to see lots of people there! Please share with those in/around Shropshire 🦅 U17s get in free 🦆 @BTO_Shropshire@ShropsWildlife
Nice to find 2 Smew at Fen Drayton RSPB today, the best UK duck & a rewarding end to term. It's a scenic site especially in winter sunshine, made even better by Bittern, Cattle Egrets, Glossy Ibis, Bearded Tit, 00s of ducks as seen in recent weeks. @CambsBirdClub@emwright_7
The closing date for the @_BTO Young Leaders Course @spurnbirdobs is this Sunday 31st July. The course is held on 10th -13th August. See tweet on this account or @_BTO for details. If you are 16 -24 it’s a great opportunity and it’s FREE. Go for it🐦
This week saw the hottest day ever in the UK That's why it's more important than ever that we protect and restore our peatlands. UK peatlands store an amazing 3.2 billion tonnes of carbon, filter water and alleviate flooding #BogDay

My 2nd trip of summer 21 was spent visiting @sianmercer in a seriously underrated part of the country. Here's a write-up of a trip which included a day out on Anglesey, where we saw Black guillemot & 5 species of Tern including Elegant. @emwright_7

Had an amazing trip down south and to Cameron’s Cottage @cameron_b_trust with @FinchleyBirder@ArjunDutta230 and @MyaBambrick1 where the highlights were the birds of prey with WTE, Osprey, Goshawk, Peregrines, Marsh Harriers and Sparrowhawk as well as great views of Dartfords
Fantastic to listen to three OXOSS birders on @BBCOxford this morning, talking about birding in Oxford, how they got into birding & why they benefit from nature, and why they enjoy coming along to our walks!
Due to technical difficulties This is the new account for Shropshire ornithology , formerly @sosbirds , please follow and retweet to help us reach more people who followed the now defunct account , Thankyou
Our walk at Port Meadow this week had some new additions: a scope and a couple of pairs of binoculars, thanks to the brilliant @_BTO equipment donation scheme! Great to put them to good use, seeing Golden Plover, Lapwing, Dunlin, Teal and Wigeon on the floods.
A garden hedge:
Filters wind (slows it down)
Absorbs water (prevents flooding)
Absorbs CO2 (fights climate change)
Houses wildlife (promotes biodiversity)
There are 22 million gardens in the UK. Many of them will lose a fence panel this weekend. Please replace with a hedge 🌳
Some gardeners are missing the point: It really doesnt matter how well plants in your garden grow or do not grow, no plants or garden justify the use of peat. Ever. We must therefore adapt- even if that means a loss of quality (which I firmly believe is not the case)
Was in plant heaven this time last week at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 🥰 Was an amazing atmosphere and full of inspirational gardens and stalls 🌺 Especially interesting and poignant to see the COP26 and sanctuary gardens, thanks to all who made this possible for me @RHSSchools
