Third world countries exist because they are full of third world people.

If you send every German to Nigeria and every Nigerian to Germany, in 5 years, Nigeria will become a civilized nation and Germany will become a third world.

Because circumstances are not static. People relocate, lose urban income streams, or simply change priorities over time. What seems unnecessary now can become essential later.
Also, it’s not always about status; it can also be about maintaining roots.

Take a look at many of the grand houses and estates across Europe; castles, manors, country homes were once questioned in their time too. People built them for legacy, family pride, status, or simply because it was tradition. At the time, some of them probably looked excessive or unnecessary.
Fast forward, and today places like Versailles Palace in France or Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany are not just “houses”, they are economic assets, cultural symbols, and major tourist attractions generating massive revenue.
The people who built them weren’t thinking “tourist centre.” They were thinking status, family, identity, permanence...exactly the same motivations being dismissed in your statement.

The scale of the universe is wild.

We orbit the Sun with 7 other planets. Every star you see in the sky is another sun and many of them with planets. The Milky Way (our galaxy) has 400 billion stars (suns) and there are over 2 trillion galaxies beyond that in the universe.
