In 1935 Mussolini's armies crossed into Ethiopia. For two years the oldest Christian kingdom on earth was in every newspaper in England: its emperor in exile, its highland fortresses, its rock churches, the names of its provinces read out on the wireless.

In those same years an Oxford philologist was writing a story about a drowned island in the west whose survivors sailed east and founded kingdoms of stone in exile.

He called the island Númenor. In its own language, after it sank, he called it Atalantë: the Downfallen.

Tolkien wrote that the resemblance to Atlantis was no accident, and that all his life he had dreamed one dream over and over, a great wave coming in over green fields and trees, a dream he gave to Faramir.

The exiles of the drowned island carried out of it a white tree, seven stars, a sceptre, and a calendar, and raised in the east the kingdoms of Men.

That is the spine of the legend, in Tolkien's own words, and it is the spine of the tradition my series follows: a drowned country, its survivors, and the recreations of home they built along the rivers of exile.

Now lay the map of Middle-earth over the map of Ethiopia.

Gondor ↔ Gondar. The great southern kingdom of Men, city of stone and towers, against the imperial capital of Ethiopia from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, famous for its walled compound of castles.

Rohan ↔ Roha. The realm of the horse-lords against the ancient name of Lalibela, the town of the eleven churches cut downward into rock, whose kings were the Zagwe.

The Shire ↔ Shire. The hobbits' green rural homeland against Shire, the historic district of Tigray in the northern highlands.
Harad ↔ Harar. The far lands of the south and east against the walled city of Harar in the east, the fourth holy city of Islam.

Barad-dûr ↔ Bahir Dar. The Dark Tower against the city on the southern shore of Lake Tana, a day's ride from Gondar. Tolkien's name means "dark tower" in his Sindarin; the Amharic means "sea shore." The phonetic match is the striking thing, not the sense.

Minas Tirith ↔ the mother's island. The seven-tiered white city on its hill, the last fortress of the exiles, keeping the memory of the land under the sea.

Tolkien built his languages from the inside and supplied his own etymologies for every one of these names. Memory does not need to be conscious to leave fingerprints.

The strongest link is not a name. It is the shape: an island the sea took, survivors who would not let it go, and cities of stone raised in the highlands to keep a country that no longer existed.

The elves called the drowned land Atalantë. The Afar calls it Dama Ali.

She became quiet for a while and then said, “I don’t know what happened to me. I just started feeling like everything good was happening to you while I was standing still.” That was the moment I understood. She wasn’t angry because I had done something to her. She was angry because my progress reminded her of what she felt she hadn’t achieved. I forgave her, but I couldn’t continue the friendship the same way. Sometimes betrayal doesn’t come from an enemy. It comes from someone who loves you, but hasn’t learned how to be happy for you without comparing their life to yours.
