20 years ago today, @taylorswift13 made her first appearance on a Billboard chart, as her debut single “Tim McGraw” entered #HotCountrySongs at No. 60. 📈🤠
In that week’s issue, Billboard wrote that the then-16-year-old singer “gets first national chart ink exclusively in Billboard. Song title name-checks fellow artist.” Fittingly, @TheTimMcGraw himself was at No. 4 on the chart that week with “When the Stars Go Blue.”
“Tim McGraw” went on to peak at No. 6 on Hot Country Songs 30 weeks later and also became Swift’s first Billboard Hot 100 hit, reaching No. 40 in January 2007. The song served as the lead single from Swift’s self-titled debut album, which later spent 24 weeks at No. 1 on Top Country Albums.
