Some are asking why I wrote my appeal to peace in Amharic. I chose Amharic as it is the primary working language of Ethiopia and widely understood. Including all five working languages - Tigrigna, Amharic, Afaan Oromo, Somali, and Afar - would be beneficial. Here you go…

The Red Sea Dialogue Series – Proceeding 1 encapsulates the key deliberations of the inaugural Red Sea Regional Consultative Forum convened in 2024 under the theme “Red Sea Security Dynamics: The Need for Regional Cooperation.” The forum brought together policymakers, scholars, and regional stakeholders to deliberate on the evolving geopolitical, economic, and security dynamics shaping the Red Sea region.

The discussions underscored the strategic importance of the Red Sea as one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors, linking Africa, the Middle East, and beyond. Participants highlighted that sustainable peace and security in the region require inclusive dialogue, shared responsibility, and coordinated action among Red Sea littoral and adjacent states.

For Ethiopia, the Red Sea represents not only a vital economic lifeline but also a strategic frontier for regional stability and cooperation. The forum reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to advancing collective security mechanisms, regional integration, and maritime governance frameworks that promote equitable utilization and mutual benefit.

The proceedings emphasize that enhanced multilateral cooperation and trust-building measures are essential to mitigate shared challenges—ranging from piracy and illicit trade to climate pressures and geopolitical competition. The publication ultimately calls for sustained institutional engagement, policy coherence, and a common regional vision to ensure that the Red Sea remains a zone of peace, development, and cooperation.
