Bye bye Manila...Handing back the keys of RLI's temporal overseas office at UP marks the end of my research visit. I am very thankful to all the great people I met and the many interesting discussions. Looking forward to future collaborations. Salamat Po & Laban UP @RL_Institut
UP's last week special lecture focused on the decline of the left in, so today's lecture thematized the global rise of the far right and how to counteract it. Extremly interesting insights from Prof. Walden Bello from the State University of New York at Binghamton. @RL_Institut
Save the date...and thanks to UP's Center for Integrative and Development Studies for the opportunity to share Germany's experiences with the energy transition and discuss the future role of renewable energies in the Philippines! @RL_Institut
@RL_Institut Dear colleagues, emancipatory greetings and happy holidays from Manila. Not yet a holiday here but a day of marches and rallies. This is why UP staff and students gathered in the morning for speeches, chants and dances before joining the big marches downtown. @RL_Institut
It's nice to be back at UP Diliman! Why? Because of the many interesting lectures...For example today's talk about emancipatory movements, foreign influences and societal struggles in Southeast Asia by political scientist and People Power activist Nathan Quimpo...@RL_Institut
There is also a harsh side of field work...some examples:
- Getting along with limited accommodation options
- Finding the only wifi spot for uploading the gathered data
- Securing basic supplies for the research team
#EnerPHIL :-)
Time to say goodbye. We have collected more than 170 questionnaire samples. We are grateful to our team - Billy, Clang, Eugene, Imee, J4, Prof. Dioniso & Ocon, to ROMELCO - GM Rene & staff, Barangay Cap. Raul and to all respondents for patience and hospitality. SALAMAT PO!
KEEP THE ISLANDS CLEAN! Our last activity before leaving was a cleaning hike around the island for collecting at least a bit of the plastic litter polluting the islands. THX to the barangay captain and all the Kids for helping!
A major share of our questionnaire samples is collected. Now it becomes even more tricky to reach the 'last mile' households. Special thanks to our great enumerator team from UP for their commitment, motivation and patience...
Day 7 of field research for #EnerPHIL team. First qualitative impression: One of the appliances that households are keen to purchase once supplied with 24h supply are ampliefers with very, very powerful soundsystems :-)
2nd day of field research: Prof. Jo Dioniso went on with her FGD with local representatives while the team collected questionnaire samples. Challenges: High temperatures, hilly terrain and finding the preseleceted respondent among a scattered population #EnerPHIL
Once arrived we consulted the local barangay captain and his staff for presenting our socio-economic impact study. With his approval we started the questionnaire survey with randomly selected villagers #EnerPHIL
While travelling we passed diesel power barges commonly applied here in the Philippines to power the scattered islands. Besides the GHG emissions and frequent oil spills they are noisy. Give it a try... Within #EnerPHIL we study how to transition to RE for replacing these barges
Our research team finally arrived at Romblon this morning. We visited the local electric cooperative ROMELCO for conducting a focus group discussion led by Prof. Dinoiso. Very inspiring to learn about the EC's commitment for renewable energies and its vision of 90% RE by 2020!
You are right it was our flight to Tablas...but that is not an obstacle for us. We demonstrated adaptive capacity by hiring a van to Batangas Port for catching the only ferrry heading to our destination just in time...
During the last days we accustomed our filipino-german research team to the jointly developed questionnaire for the socio-economic impact study focusing on renewable based decentralized electrification in the Romblon province.
