We intend Bisquitt to be the best and most widely used open-source MQTT-SN gateway.
We plan to invest into its development a lot in the coming months and years. We also plan to follow the development of MQTT-SN 2.0 and add its support to Bisquitt over time.
So, after some deliberation, we decided to write our own gateway and open-source it, so that others can benefit from our effort.
And this is where we are now. Welcome Bisquitt!
When we started playing with MQTT-SN at Energomonitor, we tried to look for one. We ended up disappointed. We found several projects, but all were incomplete, unmaintained, or just didn’t work
This all sounds good, so what’s the catch? Well, you need to connect the MQTT and MQTT-SN worlds together. This can be done using a gateway, which translates between the two.
So what protocol should you use in this case? If you already have existing MQTT infrastructure, the best choice is MQTT-SN. It maintains MQTT semantics but works on top of UDP. This means you can keep your application-level protocols mostly unchanged.
This is not an issue if your device uses a permanent network connection or connects via GPRS/LTE. But it becomes a problem if you use networks such as NB-IoT, which only support UDP. And you want to use such networks – especially for battery-powered devices.
If you’ve ever had anything to do with the IoT world, you’ve probably encountered MQTT. It’s the standard protocol used to communicate with IoT devices. It’s used by millions of them.
But it has one problem — it works on top of TCP/IP.
