What happens to an economy when machines can produce more—but people are needed less to produce it?
That question is at the heart of A Stake in the Machine: Redesigning the Economy When Machines Do the Thinking.
AI has the potential to create extraordinary abundance. But productivity and prosperity are not automatically the same thing. If artificial intelligence changes the relationship between human labor, income, consumption, and production, then we have to think seriously about the economic architecture that connects them.
A Stake in the Machine explores that challenge through history, economics, technology, infrastructure, and policy—and asks what it would take to build an AI economy where innovation can accelerate without leaving human participation behind.
This is not an argument against AI.
It is an argument for thinking bigger about what AI makes possible.
How do we sustain demand as automation expands? How do citizens participate in machine-generated prosperity? How do we preserve incentives for investment and innovation while broadening economic opportunity? And instead of fighting over increasingly concentrated wealth, can we use AI productivity to grow the pie itself?
These are no longer abstract questions about some distant technological future. They are becoming economic questions of the present.
That is why we wrote this book.
The goal shouldn't be to stop the machine. The goal should be to make sure humanity has a stake in it.

In this Justice Talks episode, Justice Utah and Dr. James W. Bunger compare H.R. 10044 with the National Artificial Intelligence Economy Resiliency Model (NAIERM), examining where the two approaches align and how their economic mechanisms differ. The conversation explores AI-driven job displacement, consumer demand, wealth concentration, compute-based taxation, and the importance of preserving broad economic participation as machines perform more productive work. The episode also draws from A Stake in the Machine: Redesigning the Economy When Machines Do the Thinking, connecting the book’s central argument—that humanity needs a meaningful stake in AI-generated prosperity—to the emerging national policy debate. Justice Talks is an Energy & Wealth production of NAIERM Economics.

Why should we have confidence in artificial intelligence when so much of the public conversation centers on errors, hallucinations, and misuse?
In this thought-provoking article, James Bunger explores a remarkable characteristic of AI: its tendency to seek reconciliation among the information it processes. AI is not moral, honest, or ideological in the human sense—but it works toward coherence, resolving contradictions until the pieces fit together.
Through a revealing exchange with Claude about entropy, economic behavior, and Alaska’s Permanent Fund Dividend, Bunger considers whether AI’s greatest value may lie in its ability to help us uncover fundamental truths.
“Tease the truth out of AI, and you will find its greatest value.”

What happens when an economy becomes extraordinarily good at producing—but fewer people have the income and opportunity needed to participate in what it produces?
Our latest Energy & Wealth article, “When Production Outruns Participation,” examines the economic relationship between the prosperity of the late 1920s, the collapse that followed, and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence today.
This is not an argument that AI will automatically cause another Great Depression. History is rarely that simple. The collapse of 1929–1933 involved banking panics, monetary contraction, debt, deflation, falling investment and weakening demand. But beneath those interacting failures was a structural lesson we should not ignore: productive capacity alone cannot sustain prosperity. Production must remain connected to income, purchasing power and participation.
AI may allow us to produce more with fewer hours of human labor. That could create extraordinary abundance—but it may also change one of the primary ways purchasing power has historically reached households: wages.
The question is not whether we should stop innovation. The question is whether our economic architecture can evolve alongside it.
Can we grow the economic pie while ensuring humanity retains a meaningful stake in the prosperity machines help create?
History gives us a warning, but it also gives us time to design something better.
