The ancient cairn of Dunmail Raise now lies bang in the central reservation of the A591 dual carriageway.

It's said to mark the grave of #Dunmail, last King of #Strathclyde and Cumbria, defeated in 945 by the Saxons.

The king's golden crown was thrown into #Grisedale Tarn.

@oldweirdbritain This place refers to Dyfnwal ab Owain, the 10th king of Strathcycle, who died in 975.
As a result of the extension far beyond the valley of the River Clyde, his realm became known as the Kingdom of #Cumbria.
He died while on a pilgrimage to Rome, slain by the #Saxons on the pass.

The Druids' Circle, Penmaenmawr

Archeologists found buried within this circle a food vessel and the cremated remains of a child.

One stone (called the Stone of Sacrifice) contains a slight hollow in which new born babies are placed to ensure good luck.
