I delivered the keynote address at the 5th Regional Quality Conference in Mombasa, held under the theme “Future by Design,” bringing together regional leaders in standards, industry, and quality management.
The conference, hosted by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), convened standards leaders and industry players to advance quality as a driver of competitiveness, exports, and institutional performance.
As Patron of Quality, I emphasized that quality must be embedded as a culture across institutions and industry, not treated as a compliance checklist. Standards provide the framework, but execution depends on leadership, accountability, and disciplined systems at every level.
I called for a transition to Quality 4.0 by leveraging digital tools, data analytics, and emerging technologies to move from defect detection to prevention. Predictive quality systems strengthen productivity, reduce waste, and enhance reliability.
I highlighted that the real policy and business imperative lies in addressing the cost of poor quality. Weak systems erode competitiveness, increase operational inefficiencies, and undermine market confidence. Proactive quality management reduces these risks and strengthens export readiness.
I also stressed that sustainability must now form part of quality standards. Products, services, and institutions must demonstrate durability, responsible resource use, and ethical supply chains. Integrating environmental, social, and governance considerations into quality systems strengthens long term competitiveness.
I emphasized the need for agile and resilient quality management systems capable of adapting to market volatility, supply chain disruptions, and regulatory changes. Resilient quality systems support innovation and position Kenya to compete effectively under regional integration and global trade frameworks, including Vision 2030 and the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The Department of Chemistry at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is hosting a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) workshop from May 19 to 23, 2025.
Organized in collaboration with the Pan Africa Chemistry Network (PACN) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in Africa, the program is designed to equip African scientists with practical, hands-on skills to solve local challenges and contribute meaningfully to global scientific advancements.
The workshop brings together postgraduate students from JKUAT and several other institutions across Africa, including participants from Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Rwanda, and Kenya. ^DP
I had the pleasure of commissioning I Love Africa Fashion Centre at Kibra Technical and Vocational College.
The facilities at the Fashion Centre will provide practical training in fashion and design to the trainees equipping them with skills in the sector, unlocking new career opportunities and fostering self-reliance.
The Fashion Centre is established through the kind collaboration with Lee Chang Ok, Founder of I Love Africa, the Member of Parliament Kibra Hon. Peter Orero and Kibra TVC.
I commend Kibra TVC for its continued collaboration with development partners and industries in enhancing training as espoused by the goal of deeply rooting dual training in TVET institutions to ensure that trainees acquire skills to favorably compete in the global market.
I am grateful to Hon. Peter Orero who was also in attendance for his dedication and consistent support that has played a key role in the Institution's progress.
