Addendum: This study was supported by AMED’s Brain/MINDS 2.0 program and the Exploratory Research Center on Life and Living Systems (ExCELLS).
We gratefully acknowledge their support and thank all those involved.
Our collaborative study has been published in Science. NIPS and ExCELLS also issued press releases today.
Here, I briefly describe our contribution through in vivo two-photon imaging. (1/5)

Long-term imaging was led by Taiga Takahashi (now a lecturer at Fujita Health University) and Karin Tsutsumi, then a student at Tokyo University of Science.
They carried out this challenging and painstaking work. This was a collaboration among NIPS, ExCELLS, and TUS. (5/5)
We observed spines disappear during QIH and reappear at the same locations after QIH.
This longitudinal imaging captured reversible structural changes in hippocampal spines in the living brain across the hibernation-like state. (4/5)
We performed long-term in vivo two-photon imaging of dendritic spines on hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons before, during, and after QIH.
By imaging the same field of view for about a week, we tracked spine morphology from QIH induction through recovery. (3/5)
Our two-photon imaging was part of the “Live Imaging of the Hibernating Brain” project under KAKENHI Transformative Research Areas (A), “Hibernation Biology 2.0.”
We aim to observe the hibernating brain as it is. We are studying QIH mice and hibernating hamsters. (2/5)
1/10 Our paper is out today in Science!
During artificial hibernation, hippocampal firing rates fell by ~70% and synapse density fell by more than half—yet mice retained memories formed beforehand.
How can memory survive such extensive brain remodeling?
