I think it’s worth considering, too, that the reason the Democrats haven’t found any inspiring, next-generation replacements for the 80-year-olds in Congress is because the progressive project is largely played out. The Dems haven’t really had much to say or do since the 1970s—anyone can go to school or get a job now, anyone can get an apartment, anyone can get a car loan with decent credit, etc.—so there aren’t any “big projects” left for them to pursue.

This is why the party, for at least the last 30 years, has been stuck in a time warp constantly talking about the 1960s Civil-Rights era. That was the last time the Dems had a genuinely identifiable, meaningful project that the majority of the country could get behind. Everything since then has been minor tweaks here and there, which is fine, but we’ve been gaslighted at every step into believing each tweak was on a par with ending Jim Crow. The country just grew tired of it, which left the party with nothing to work with to create new, inspiring candidates.

What mature, technological civilizations need is preservation of the things that have been repeatedly demonstrated to work, coupled with the adeptness to make minor changes when required to do so. But that stands in stark contrast to what progressivism needs, which is constant agitation and reinvention. Progressivism is a crude 19th-century tool banging around on advanced 21st-century equipment. It simply has no utility anymore—a fact which the Democrats can’t admit because to do so would deprive them of identity and meaning.

There’s an obvious critique to be made here about how DEI policies almost inevitably lead to sub-optimal hiring and admissions outcomes in academia (the odds of them producing better-qualified hires or students are, in the aggregate, vanishingly small). But the DEI angle of this story is only one aspect of it. The more important thing to be gleaned from it is the degree to which identitarian balderdash has become de rigueur in higher ed, particularly in the social sciences. The kind of nonsensical, auto-ethnographic race musings Arday was successfully submitting to journals and getting published (all while plagiarizing significant quantities of it) should be a wake-up call to people—parents especially—that those tens of thousands of dollars you’re spending to put a young person through college are, in some sizable proportion, being intercepted and redirected by university admins to keep midwits and phonies on the payroll.

Exacerbating matters is the fact that it’s precisely Arday’s type of academic—the “education sociologist,” the “cultural studies” professor, etc.—who frequently abuses his or her position to propagandize American, Canadian, and British students into adopting self-loathing beliefs about their civilizations, their histories, and their people, all in an effort to demoralize them. As Marxist political theorists have long understood, oikophobia is a river that carves deep and fast when it flows from the top down.

Although this is just one story about one serial fabulist posing as an academic, we should stop to consider that literally hundreds of people—themselves working in academia—spent years credentializing and defending Arday despite the many signs that his biography was comically suspect and his scholarly output virtually non-existent. Firing him (or him resigning) won’t, by itself, fix the problem. You have to start shitcanning some of the people within his orbit.
