Today, I had the honour of completing the 10km road race in 45 minutes at the 1st Enugu City International Marathon. It was a proud moment for me and for our people who turned out in large numbers to witness history being made.
In the elite 42km full marathon, East African athletes dominated, taking home the star prizes of $15,000 for first place, $10,000 for second place, and $5,000 for third place. In the Nigerian elite category, the best male and female runners earned N1 million each, while the second and third places received N750,000 and N500,000 respectively.
This is just the beginning. As I promised during last yearβs half marathon, we have now made the Enugu City International Marathon a global event. Next year, it will be even bigger, attracting elite athletes from around the world.
Sports, for us, is serious business. We are connecting the dots, as we aim to attract three million visitors annually, making Enugu the destination for tourism and investment. We are nurturing dreams, birthing goals, and attracting opportunities that will make our economy thrive.
Many thanks to the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr Lloyd Ekweremadu and his team, the consultants led by Yetunde Olopade, our security agencies, the media, and everyone who worked hard to make this event a success.
I also thank the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu, former governor of Imo State, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Uchenna Ugwu, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ezenta Ezeani, and other distinguished officials who graced the event.
The Enugu City International Marathon has come to stay. Tomorrow is here!
