Shri Ramesh Pandey, ADG (Wildlife), MoEFCC, and the Focal Point for the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) in India, chaired a technical meeting with representatives of the CMS Dugong Secretariat, Abu Dhabi, to review the progress and activities being undertaken under the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Dugongs and Their Habitats. The Focal Point for the CMS Dugong MoU in India - IGF (Wildlife), MoEFCC - was also present in the meeting.
Scientists from the Wildlife Institute of India (@wii_india) made a presentation on the dugong conservation initiatives undertaken in India over the past decade, including studies on dugong ecology, population monitoring and estimation, habitat conservation and community engagement. The presentation highlighted the important role of local communities in advancing dugong conservation efforts.
The Chair welcomed the proposal for India to host the Fourth Meeting of Signatories to the CMS Dugong MoU and suggested the way forward in this regard. Shri Pandey also emphasized the need for more frequent interactions among the Signatory States to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, experiences and best practices.
Highlighting that collective action would strengthen dugong conservation efforts, Shri Pandey appreciated the valuable contributions of WII scientists. He observed that the scientific insights and field-level experience gained in India could contribute meaningfully to the global framework for dugong conservation.
