This week’s Taylor Talk was all about food waste and composting. Our grade 4 students will be making ziploc bag composters to watch their food waste break down into fertilizer. There were a lot of great questions from our curious scientists! @SEPSciCen @SCCDSB @LKelempro
October 17-23 is Waste Reduction Week! At the CLASS office, we have a FoodCycler that turns our food waste into compost for our plants! We fill one bucket a day with coffee grinds, banana peels, apple cores, etc., and turn it into dirt! No food waste to landfill here :)
We’re back with our first Taylor Talk of the school year! I spoke with our Grade 1 students about environmental protection and the important lessons we learned from The Lorax. A healthy environment is our most valuable asset. @SEPSciCen @LKelempro @SCCDSB
I’m incredibly inspired by all of the cool environmental projects taking place at Alexander MacKenzie Secondary School. What a fantastic opportunity for our students. Horticulture, beekeeping, vermicomposting, farm to table cooking… Incredible! @LKDSB
Today’s Taylor Talk touched on the topic of climate change: what’s causing it, and what can we do to stop it? Knowing what it is and how we can help is an important first step for our students. @SEPSciCen @LKelempro @SCCDSB
Today’s Taylor Talk brought concepts of renewable energy to our Grade 5 students. They had some amazing questions at the end - very impressive! Excited to hear how the Renew-A-Bead activity goes! @LKelempro @SCCDSB @SEPSciCen
@ACGunz @PEACH_HealthON@LHSCCanada By committing to improving the health of the environment, you’re committing to improving the health of your patients. It goes hand in hand. Without environmental health, there can’t be human health.
For Earth Day, I joined students from BDHS in collecting 20 bags of litter from around the community. My co-op student Drew organized the event, and I’m so proud! Way to go, @BDHSCats!! @LKDSB
Today I had the honour of speaking to BDHS staff and students about the history and importance of Earth Day. It felt good (and weird!) to be able to present in person again! @BDHSCats@LKDSB
April is Earth Month! Yesterday’s Taylor Talk was all about Earth Day and how we can all do our part to protect the 🌎. I challenged Grade 6 students to pledge to do one thing differently in their lives to help the environment. Together, we can make a difference!
@LKDSB and @SCCDSB teachers: we’re forming a teacher committee as part of the cross-board Green Team! If you have ideas for how to make our schools more environmentally sustainable and would like to join our team, let me know! 🌳
Today’s Taylor Talk was all about drinking water - where it comes from, how we make it safe to drink, and what we can do to conserve and protect our water supply. @SEPSciCen @LKelempro @SCCDSB
Yesterday, we had our first Green Team meeting! Staff, students, and executives from both @SCCDSB and @LKDSB came together with the goal of improving the environmental performance of our schools. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them!

@MissLeFaive Hi guys! Any paper will work! The best would have bigger fibres, like construction paper or egg carton, but all paper will work! The purpose of the paper is to suck up some of the moisture and help your compost sample to be less wet.
